UPDATE: Arrighetti will not have surgery on his thumb. He will instead be in a cast for around two and a half weeks.
During batting practice on Monday, Spencer Arrighetti got hit by a batted ball on his pitching hand. The Astros announced that Arrighetti suffered a broken thumb. No further information has been released as of yet, in regards to surgery or recovery time, but Arrighetti will likely be out for an extended period of time.
It’s a tough blow for an Astros staff that is already down Shawn Dubin, J.P. France, Luis Garcia, Cristian Javier and Lance McCuller Jr.
In 9.2 innings pitched this season, Arrighetti wasn’t great, posting a 7.7% K-BB% and 4.64 FIP, but it’s early in the season. He was posting 20+ and even 30+ K-BB% in the minors.
There has not been an announcement as to who will be called up and/or replace Arrighetti in the rotation.
