Fantasy Baseball Sleeper: Is top prospect Chase Dollander worth an add?

According to manager Bud Black, the Rockies will be calling up top prospect Chase Dollander to make his MLB debut on Sunday at Coors Field against the visiting Athletics.

Dollander is the team’s No. 1 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, who ranked him as the No. 24 prospect in all of baseball and the No. 5 right-handed pitcher.

The Rockies drafted Dollander with the ninth overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, and he worked in 23 games in 2024, totaling 118 innings across High-A and Double-A. He went a combined 6-2 with a 2.59 ERA, 2.92 FIP, and 12.9 K/9.

He was with the MLB team for spring training this season and went 2-3 with a 7.13 ERA and 6.39 FIP, but he did keep his strikeout total high with 24 punchouts in 17 2/3 innings. He had two back-to-back scoreless outings against the Guardians and Giants but was knocked around for six runs in 3 1/3 innings against the Brewers in his last appearance of the spring.

Dollander had five strikeouts in four innings while giving up one run in his only Triple-A appearance for the Albuquerque Isotopes. He will make his next start in the big leagues, though, facing the A’s on Sunday afternoon. He is definitely a top prospect to watch the rest of the season.

Fantasy baseball impact

With such good strikeout potential, Chase Dollander is definitely worth considering on waiver wires in season-long leagues. He has a high enough ceiling to be worth a speculative add if your roster can carry him. However, he is a risky pickup, given the uneven outings this spring and the fact that his home games will come at Coors Field.

The 23-year-old will give the Rockies rotation a good boost, though, and be an intriguing streaming option or DFS play with a high ceiling if only based on his punchout potential.
