Here are my top Pick6 plays for the 4/4 MLB slate.
Matt Olson More Than 0.5 Home Runs
The Braves have had a disastrous start to their season. After a West Coast trip to start the season, they are heading back to Atlanta with a record of 0-7. They need to get the ball rolling in their first home series against the Marlins. Tonight, the Braves face Max Meyer, the young right-hander. Meyer has only made one outing so far this year, allowing one earned run in 5.2 innings against the Pirates. That was a strong start to the season, but he is very unproven and inexperienced. Meyer has made just 14 career starts in Major League Baseball and has a career ERA of 5.50. Meyer has faced the Braves twice in his 14 career starts, and Matt Olson hit a home run off of him in the most recent game, last August. Olson has always hit better against right-handed pitching, with a career tOPS+ of 106 against righties, compared to 86 against lefties. The Braves need a spark tonight, and Olson could provide it in a matchup where he has a good history.
Juan Soto More Than 0.5 Runs
The Mets make their home debut this afternoon against the Blue Jays. Juan Soto will play his first game as a Met at Citi Field, which should have the emotions running high. It seems like fate that Soto is given such a favorable pitching matchup for his first home game with his new team. Juan Soto has frankly dominated Kevin Gausman throughout his career. The two have met many times before and Soto has almost always gotten the best of him. Soto has had 27 career plate appearances against Gausman and has a .741 OBP against him. Soto has been walked 12 times in those 27 plate appearances, making it 15 at-bats against Gausman. In those 15 at-bats, Soto has eight hits, including a home run. So, in 27 career plate appearances against Gausman, Soto is slashing .533/.741/.867. Soto should have no problem getting on base in this game, and behind him in the lineup, Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo are both having strong starts to the season. If Soto doesn’t hit one over the fence himself, one of those guys should be able to drive him to get a run on the board.
Ke’Bryan Hayes More Than 0.5 Singles
Ke’Bryan Hayes is off to a decent start this season. He has five hits this season, four of which have been singles. Today, against Max Fried, Hayes should add another single to his season total. Hayes and Fried have faced off many times in the past, totaling 15 plate appearances against each other. In those 15 plate appearances, Hayes has six hits, and all six of those hits have been singles. Hayes has never been able to create any real pop off of Fried to get extra-base hits, but he has a strong .400 batting average. Fried didn’t look particularly sharp in his Yankees debut, making it only 4.2 innings against the Brewers while giving up seven hits and six runs (only two earned). Hayes should feel confident in this matchup because he has always been so solid against left-handed pitching. He has a career tOPS+ of 134 against lefties, compared to 86 against righties. Hayes should be able to tack another single onto his career count against Fried in this game.
Seth Lugo Less Than 4.5 Strikeouts Thrown
Seth Lugo has made one start so far this season. That start came against the Guardians, where Lugo pitched five innings, giving up three runs and recording just four strikeouts. Tonight, Lugo faces the dangerous Orioles lineup. Lugo has always struggled against Baltimore. In three career games against the Orioles, Baltimore hitters are slashing .297/.316/.622. That includes a start against them last season, where Lugo went 5.1 innings and gave up four runs. More importantly, Lugo only struck out one batter in that matchup. The Orioles have crushed right-handed pitching so far this season. As a team, their tOPS+ is 110 against righties and 70 against lefties. Baltimore should be able to force Lugo out of the game relatively early, just like the Guardians did in his first start this season. He struggled against a lot of these same players last season and should stay under this strikeout number tonight.
Tommy Pham Less Than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
Tommy Pham has had a dreadful start to the 2025 season. He has just two hits in 23 at-bats, good enough for an .087 batting average. Additionally, none of those hits have come in Pham’s last three games played. Pham has scored one run so far this season and has zero RBIs. All of that equates to Pham staying under this number, even against an average pitcher. To make matters worse, Tommy Pham has struggled against Max Fried his whole career. Pham has 16 career at-bats against Fried and just two hits, slashing .125/.222/.125 against the lefty. With the way that Pham has started the season, combined with his terrible track record against Fried, it’s hard to see him clearing this number today.
Jonah Heim More Than 1.5 Total Bases
The Rangers have had a strong start to their season, sitting at 5-2 heading into this game against Tampa Bay. Jonah Heim has started four of those games, with an OPS of 1.077 to start the season. The Rangers will be facing off against Zack Littell in this matchup. Jonah Heim and Littell have faced off a couple of times in their careers, with Heim getting the better of Littell. In four career plate appearances against Littell, Heim has three hits, two of which were doubles. Heim has already hit two home runs this season, demonstrating his great power. Littell has always been better at home in his career, with a road ERA of 4.22 and an opponent OPS of .783 in road games. Heim should keep up the strong start to his season in a pitching matchup where he has had a lot of success in the past.
