MLB Prop Bets for April 2, 2025
MacKenzie Gore over 5.5 strikeouts -105
Gore is coming off an insane performance against the Phillies, in which he struck out 13 through six innings of shutout baseball. What was the secret to his success? A change in his pitch arsenal. Gore went from throwing his four-seamer 55% of the time down to 44% while bumping his slider from 1.3% to 24%. His slider accounted for six of the 13 strikeouts he had, which was a huge reason for his success. The Blue Jays’ expected lineup for today isn’t particularly strong against lefties, and they had a combined 25% strikeout rate against sliders from lefties last season. Between his fastball and slider, I think Gore will find a lot of success against the Blue Jays this afternoon and go over his strikeout prop of 5.5.

Athletics over 4.5 runs +110
This Athletics offense is sneaky. They don’t have guys that will consistently get on base, but they will hit balls out of the park often. That’s why I like them to go over 4.5 runs against Jameson Taillon and the Cubs bullpen. After a bad spring training, Taillon got roughed up by the Diamondbacks for six runs on nine hits in just 4.1 innings of work. Now, he’ll face an Athletics team that hits his two main pitches—the four-seamer and the cut fastball—well. Today’s expected lineup has a combined .358 wOBA and a .180 ISO against the four-seamer and a .339 wOBA and a .231 ISO against the cutter. Not to mention, their home ballpark in Sacramento has been playing like it’s Coors Field 2.0. The teams have scored a total of 32 runs in the first two games of the series. The Cubs bullpen hasn’t provided much relief in the early going, posting a 6.52 ERA, a 4.82 FIP, and a 6.2 BB/9.

Philadelphia Phillies over 4.5 runs -110
A lot of buzz has been circulating about how well the Rockies (and White Sox) have pitched so far. It’s been very impressive: the Rockies’ starters have thrown 21.1 innings, allowing just two runs on 19 hits with 16 strikeouts. Not too shabby!
Well, that ends today.
Kyle Freeland has made one start already, and early indications show a change in the way he pitches. While it’s not time to say this is officially how he’ll pitch, this is what we saw in his first start. He focused on a sinker and sweeper, which were his two main pitches. His fastball, cutter, and changeup were used sparingly. So if he’s going to be a sinker-sweeper pitcher, that’s great news for the Phillies. They do well against those, with a .393 wOBA against sinkers and .333 against sweepers from lefties last season. The weather is on the cooler side in Philly, but winds will blow out during the game. With a porous bullpen behind him, I think the Phils score at least five runs tonight.
