Jurickson Profar update: Suspended 80 games for banned substance use

Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, first scooped by MLB insider Mike Rodriguez, Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar will be suspended 80 games for violating the MLB’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

There’s never a good time to have a player suspended, but the timing is rough for this Braves squad. They’re off to an 0-4 skid to begin the year. The lack of offense has burned them thus far, scoring only seven runs to date, so losing their major lineup acquisition from this offseason is going to hurt.

Profar was off to a 3-for-15 start at the dish after a Silver Slugger-winning campaign last year for the San Diego Padres. He parlayed that success into a three-year, $42 million deal in Atlanta. Now, he’s slated to miss half of his first season with the Braves. Profar issued an apology note to the fans and his team/teammates.

An appeal may be coming, but these suspensions tend to stick. Atlanta has to graft for the first half of the year until Profar can return.
