Well, maybe not as much this year. The three-time defending batting title winner is off to an 0-for-13 start at the plate this year. That’s an uncharacteristic slump for the career .321 hitter who should be in his prime.
This didn’t hinder the Padres much as they swept the flailing Atlanta Braves in the opening four-game series. Now, they welcome the Cleveland Guardians to Petco Park for three games. This could be a chance for Arraez to get his season going, facing a team he has plenty of experience against.

First off, you’re not going to keep this man down for long. He may not hit for much power, steal many bags, or play valuable defense. But I’m not here to litigate the value of Luis Arraez the baseball player. As Brad Pitt in Moneyball asked, “Can he get on base?”
The answer in his case is almost always yes. There’s also some additional juice in this matchup. Arraez has a lifetime 5-for-9 mark against Guardians starting pitcher Luis Ortiz, so he sees him well. There are also plenty of arms in the Cleveland bullpen that Arraez is familiar with.
