Deion Sanders has reportedly signed a massive extension to stay at Colorado for the next five seasons.

Nobody knew what to expect when Deion Sanders decided to take the Colorado head coaching job in 2023. His only college coaching experience had been at the FCS level with Jackson State, and Colorado’s program was in a terrible place. However, Sanders stepped into Boulder and immediately exceeded expectations. In his first ever game, Colorado upset TCU as massive underdogs and he continued to raise the bar over the next two seasons. Colorado ended up winning just four games in 2023, but with Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter returning, along with an influx of transfer talent, they had an amazing 2024 season. The Buffaloes went 9-3 in the regular season and Travis Hunter ended up winning the Heisman Trophy. Hunter and Sanders are both expected to be top ten picks in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
Coach Prime has made Colorado a cool place to play and has made them competitors in the Big 12 in just two seasons. However, with both of his sons set to depart the program, along with the Heisman Trophy winner, there was a lot of speculation that Sanders would leave the program, as well. There was reportedly interest from multiple NFL teams to hire Sanders, and also rumors that he could take a bigger college football job. The NFL coaching carousel came and went, and it seemed clear that Sanders would be staying at Colorado. However, this news makes it certain that Sanders will be staying in Boulder and possibly for a long time.
Deion Sanders has reportedly been offered a new five-year contract worth $54 million. If the numbers in this contract are true, he will become the fourth-highest paid coach in all of college football. The only three coaches being paid more than him, Kirby Smart, Ryan Day and Dabo Swinney, have all won national championships. Sanders has turned the entire Colorado program around in a short amount of time by making it a desirable destination for recruits and transfers. It has also gotten the fanbase and student body re-invested in the program. That is invaluable to the university and other schools would surely want to steal him away, so this contract is very deserving. The big question will be how Sanders’ team performs without their star quarterback and generational talent next season and beyond. This will be Coach Prime’s first time having to build a team relatively from scratch, rather than transferring in with his top talent.
