Here are my top Pick6 plays for the MLB Opening Day slate.
Freddie Freeman More Than 0.5 RBIs
Freddie Freeman has been one of the best hitters in baseball over the past decade, and he is still thriving in this loaded Dodgers lineup. Los Angeles managed to put up five runs last night against the reigning AL Cy Young winner, Tarik Skubal. However, Freeman did not get in on the party, going 0/4 against Detroit. That should not be overly surprising given how good Skubal’s stuff is and the fact that Freeman has struggled against left-handed pitching his entire career.
Tonight, against the righty Jack Flaherty, Freeman should be poised for a bounce-back performance. Freeman has a career tOPS+ of 109 vs. right-handed pitching, compared to a tOPS+ of 79 against left-handed pitching. Freddie Freeman has faced Flaherty a few times in his career and always found success. Freeman is 6/14 with a home run and 4 RBIs against Flaherty. With so many great hitters around him, there will surely be base runners for Freeman to drive in, and he should do so against a favorable pitching matchup.
Brent Rooker More Than 0.5 RBIs
Brent Rooker was a slow-bloomer in baseball but ended up being one of the breakout stars of last season. Rooker was a star in college but took a while to develop through the minor leagues and while bouncing around several major league teams. However, the outfielder was signed by the Athletics in the offseason before the 2023 season and found some serious success, leading the Athletics in almost every major offensive category. Rooker built on that success in 2024 and ended up being an MLB All-Star on the back of 39 home runs and 112 RBIs.
Rooker is looking to keep that consistency going after two great seasons with the Athletics. The good news when backing Rooker against Luis Castillo is that he sees virtually no drop-off against right-handed pitching compared to lefties. Rooker actually had a higher OBP against righties last season. Similarly, Rooker was actually better on the road than at home last season in almost every category, including a 107 tOPS+ on the road compared to 92 at home. Rooker should be confident heading into this matchup and drive in a run for the A’s.
Ketel Marte More Than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
Ketel Marte is coming off of a great 2024 season where he made the All-Star team, was voted to the All-MLB First Team and won a Silver Slugger Award. Marte has already started 2025 strong with a 2/5 performance and two runs scored against the Cubs yesterday. It was a high-scoring affair, with the Cubs winning 10-6 in Arizona. Marte had an incredible .950 OPS at home last season, and if he can keep that up this season, he will be consistently getting on base while batting lead-off for Arizona at Chase Field. Cubs pitcher Jameson Taillon struggled away from Wrigley Field last season. He had a 2.18 ERA in Chicago, compared to a 4.58 ERA when on the road. Marte and the Diamondbacks should have a solid night against Taillon, pushing Marte over this number.
Brandon Nimmo More Than 1.5 Total Bases
Brandon Nimmo and the Mets squandered multiple chances to win against the Astros yesterday. They weren’t able to drive in runs, but they got a lot of baserunners, which indicates long-term success. Nimmo went 1/4 yesterday but had to face the tough left-handed Framber Valdez. Nimmo will be happy to see the right-handed Hunter Brown on the mound tonight. In his career against right-handed pitching, Nimmo has a .828 OPS and a 105 tOPS+ compared to a .764 OPS and 89 tOPS+ against left-handed pitching. Last season, Nimmo had 45 multi-hit games and a career-high 53 extra-base hits. He should find some of that magic against Brown in this game and go over 1.5 total bases.
Charlie Morton More Than 3.5 Strikeouts Thrown
Charlie Morton is one of the oldest players in baseball at 41 years old, but he is still churning out solid performances every season. While his strikeouts per nine innings dropped some last season, he still had a respectable 9.1 strikeouts per nine. Averaging about a strikeout per inning means that Morton would need to pitch just four innings to clear this number in an average game. Morton is a reliable pitcher to trust in any situation because his numbers don’t fluctuate much whether he is at home or on the road, or whether he is facing left-handed or right-handed pitching. In fact, Morton had a tOPS+ of 100 both home and away last season. The Blue Jays’ lineup struggled yesterday, with just two runs on four hits. Morton should have another consistent performance and go over this number.
Cedric Mullins More Than 0.5 RBIs
Cedric Mullins and the Orioles had a great start to their 2025 season yesterday in Toronto. Baltimore scored 12 runs on 14 hits and almost everybody in the lineup made their contribution to that big day. However, nobody had a better day than Cedric Mullins. Mullins went 3/5 with two home runs and five RBIs. In this great Baltimore lineup, Mullins can sometimes be overlooked by opposing pitchers. However, that gives him the chance to drive in his teammates who are ahead of him in the lineup. Mullins thrives against right-handed pitching, with a 112 tOPS+ against right-handers, compared to a 71 tOPS+ against lefties. In his career, 77% of Mullins’ RBIs have come against right-handed pitchers. Mullins has found success against Kevin Gausman in the past as well. He is a career 5/15 off of the Blue Jays’ pitcher and should be able to drive in at least one more run today after yesterday’s monstrous performance.
