Houston vs. Purdue prediction, pick for March Madness Sweet Sixteen

Houston vs. Purdue prediction, pick for March Madness Sweet Sixteen

Updated:

By: Dan Johnson

Anyone else get the feeling, off the bat, that Houston should bury Purdue in the first twenty minutes? I sure do—and that’s dangerous. They’ve just yet to really dominate, despite looking dominant. Perhaps it was the pesky way Gonzaga made it close there at the end in the R32, or the utter lack of eyes on their dominant SIUE win in the R64. But it feels like this might be Houston’s best opportunity in their bracket path to grind a heel into an opponent. Purdue, however, has otherwise to say. They’ve shut all our High Point/McNeese upset hopes down, and will need an even more complete performance here to have a shot at beating the Cougars. I’ll detail it all in my preview, prediction, pick, and best bet for this March Madness Sweet Sixteen college basketball game between Florida and Maryland.

Here’s how I’ll play the game. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games each round, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more to-the-minute, point-of-need analyses and plays throughout conference tournament week.

Houston vs. Purdue preview, prediction

Houston enters the Sweet Sixteen as one of the most complete teams in the field, and it has been nothing short of dominant in its first two March Madness games. Their defense continues to stifle opposing offenses, ranking first nationally in defensive turnover rate, forcing turnovers on 21.7% of opponent possessions, and second in two-point field goal defense (allowing just 44.5% from inside the arc).

Against both SIUE and a talented Gonzaga squad, Houston’s physicality, elite shot-blocking, and suffocating perimeter defense were evident. The Cougars allowed just 39.7% shooting against SIUE in the round of 64 and 43.2% against Gonzaga in the round of 32. Houston’s ability to dominate the glass is another critical advantage, ranking 14th-nationally in offensive rebound percentage (36.9%), and fifth in rebound margin (+7.2). This makes them a matchup nightmare for a Purdue team that lacks the interior presence to stop Houston’s relentless attack.

Purdue, while a formidable four-seed with a potent offense, enters this game with significant concerns. Braden Smith, one of the nation’s best point guards, will remain crucial in creating, generating, and hope-and-prayering offense for Purdue. The Boilermakers rank No. 14 in effective field goal percentage offense, but their shooting attack will be tested against Houston’s top-ranked defense. Purdue’s defense, too, is a liability, ranking No. 351 nationally in effective field goal percentage defense over the final stretch of the regular season. Their inability to stop opponents from scoring inside, coupled with their struggles to close out on shooters, was evident in their Round of 64 and Round of 32 games.

Purdue has glaring weaknesses in both defense and execution during tournament games. Against High Point, they allowed 51.9% shooting inside the arc, exposing their paint defense. They struggled to establish defensive consistency, which Houston can exploit. The vulnerability continued against McNeese State, allowing 54.3% shooting on two-pointers, showing their inefficiency at the rim. Purdue ranks No. 106 in the nation in two-point defense, allowing 49.6%. Houston’s physicality in the paint, led by J’Wan Roberts (1.5 blocks per game), will challenge Purdue.

Purdue vs. Houston pick, best bet

While Purdue’s offense has been smooth, thanks to Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer setting up key plays, their lack of ability to contain drives and protect the rim could cause real trouble. Against weaker teams like High Point and McNeese State, Purdue’s offensive efficiency (No. 14 in effective field goal percentage offense) could mask their defensive deficiencies. But against a well-rounded team like Houston, these issues will likely be exposed. The Cougars will look to capitalize on Purdue’s struggles by using their athleticism to exploit the paint, converting defensive rebounds into quick transition points.

Houston’s transition defense, ranked fourth nationally, will neutralize Purdue’s fast-break offense, which has been effective but will face a tougher challenge against the Cougars’ suffocating pressure. With Houston also ranking seventh in adjusted defensive efficiency, they are more than equipped to handle Purdue’s offensive game, which relies heavily on ball screens and perimeter shooting. Purdue struggles in half-court sets, ranking No. 101 in adjusted offensive efficiency in half-court situations, and this was clearly demonstrated in both of their March Madness games, as seen above.

The spread of -8.5 for Houston seems generous given the Cougars’ overall dominance. Their defense, rebounding, and ability to disrupt Purdue’s offense will make it difficult for the Boilermakers to keep pace. Houston’s physicality will overpower Purdue’s defense, and the Cougars should cover this number with relative ease.

Best bet: Houston -8.5 (-105)
