Golf Best Bets: Top Tournament Group Picks for the Texas Children’s Houston Open

The PGA TOUR heads to Houston this week for the Texas Children’s Houston Open. While the event has moved courses and spots on the calendar throughout its history, it draws a strong field to a challenging venue this week. Let’s take a look at some of my favorite Tournament Group picks from the available options on DraftKings Sportsbook.

If you’re not familiar with the Tournament Group matchups, let’s quickly review the format. In the matchup section of the tournament page, there are six Tournament Groups made up of five players with similar odds to win the event. The Tournament Group winner is the lowest scorer from just that handful of golfers at the end of the full tournament. Tournament Groups offer a nice balance between risk and reward — rather than picking the winner from the full field, you just have to select the top player from the group of five.

Looking at this week’s Tournament Groups, here are my three golf best bets:

Tony Finau (+320)

Finau has an outstanding course history at Memorial Golf Club and is in my picks as he goes up against Michael Kim (+320), Wyndham Clark (+350), Sungjae Im (+350) and Jason Day (+360).

In 2022, Finau won this event for his fifth PGA TOUR career win. He added the 2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta title, but hasn’t won in 2024 or 2025. He finished runner-up at this course last year as one of his five top-10 finishes in 2024, and he also picked up a top-25 at Memorial Park back in 2020.

Finau has played a lighter schedule so far this year with just seven events. He missed the cut at THE PLAYERS in his most recent result, but he posted a T36 at the Palmer, a T5 at The Genesis Invitational, and a T13 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in his three most recent events before the missed cut.

Of the rest of the group, Michael Kim probably has the best form. He posted five top-13 finishes in a row this season before also missing the cut at THE PLAYERS and bouncing back with a T28 last week. However, at this course he has gone MC-T47-T64.

Wyndham Clark and Jason Day both had to withdraw recently. Clark had a neck issues at THE PLAYERS, while Day withdrew due to illness just before the event began. Day has a great course history here, so he’s tempting at +360 as a longshot play if you don’t trust Finau, or if you think one of them is certain to win the group and want to play both.

Im is a wild card because he does have decent course history. However, he has struggled this season with a pair of top-20 finishes, but also three missed cuts and two other finishes outside the top 50.

With the other options all lacking in one area or the other, this seems like a great spot to go with Tony and pick him to contend again on this course he plays so well.

Thomas Detry (+330)

I highlighted Detry in my top pivot plays for this week in DFS contests, and I also like him a lot in this group. He’s up against Maverick McNealy (+320), Alex Smalley (+320), Sahith Theegala (+330) and Keith Mitchell (+360).

McNealy has missed back-to-back cuts at the Arnold Palmer and THE PLAYERS, crashing out with an 80 and 81 in the second round of the two tournaments. Smalley made the cut at THE PLAYERS but missed the cut last week at the Valspar. I’m a little surprised that they’re the favorites based on their sketchy recent form.

Sahith Theegala missed the cut at the Palmer but made the cut in 11 of his 12 events this season. However, he has finished well back in the pack, posting just one top-30 finish in 2025. Mitchell has been similar with six made cuts in his seven 2025 events, but has finished T42-MC-T54 in his last three tournaments.

To be fair, Detry also missed two cuts in Florida after claiming his breakthrough PGA TOUR win at the WM Phoenix Open earlier this season. He got back on track last week though with a T22 at the Valspar.

He also finished T2 last year at this event, and the course is a great fit for his game, making him my favorite pick in this group at very favorable odds of +330.

Nick Taylor (+350)

Taylor is in a group with Kevin Yu (+300), Seamus Power (+320), Patrick Rodgers (+330) and Jake Knapp (+350). I’m taking the Canadian from this group based on his strong form this season before missing the cut at THE PLAYERS.

Before his disappointing stop at TPC Sawgrass, Taylor had made the cut in all seven of his events in 2025 with a win at the Sony Open in Hawaii and four finishes in the top 31. He placed T9 at Torrey Pines at the Genesis Invitational, which has some strong correlations to this week’s course, especially when it comes to length.

Taylor ranks fourth in the field in Strokes Gained: Approach over his last 36 rounds and ninth in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green. He should be poised for a bounce-back week in Houston.

Yu comes in off a T12 last week at the Valspar after also missing the cut at THE PLAYERS, but he’ll be making his course debut. Power finished T8 at the Valspar, but missed the cut in his two previous events and also in his only previous appearance at Memorial Golf Club. Jake Knapp missed the cut here last year, as well as last week at the Valspar after a strong run of four top-25 finishes to play his way close to contention for a ticket to Augusta.

Aside from Taylor, Patrick Rodgers was my other strong consideration since he has made the cut here in his last two trips and finished T16 in 2022. Rodgers also had four top-25 finishes before missing the cut at THE PLAYERS, but his game doesn’t seem to fit this track quite as well since his iron play isn’t as solid as Taylor’s. Over the last 20 rounds, for example, he ranks No. 103 in the field in Strokes Gained: Approach while Taylor ranks No. 4.
