As the NFL free agent market dwindles, the New England Patriots are the latest team to make a splash signing — a star wide receiver will soon be catching passes from Drake Maye.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Stefon Diggs and the Patriots are in agreement on a three-year contract worth up to $69 million, with at least $26 million in guaranteed money.
Diggs is a major addition to a New England receiver room which has needed serious reinforcements. While he suffered a torn ACL last October, the 31-year old is a former All-Pro who brings much needed experience to the position group and should immediately step in as the primary target, assuming he’s healthy.
Perhaps most importantly, Diggs will be a reliable target for second-year quarterback Drake Maye, who showed flashes of high upside last season despite working with limited weapons on offense. There’s parallels here to Diggs’ time in Buffalo, where he formed a connection with a young Josh Allen and significantly assisted in the quarterback’s emergence as one of the NFL’s top signal-callers.
Diggs tallied 496 yards and three touchdowns on 46 receptions for the Houston Texans last season before the ACL tear. Over the course of his 10-year career, he boasts over 10,000 receiving yards, 71 total touchdowns, four Pro Bowl selections, and one All-Pro nod.
