With several of these names already ruled out for the season, the Philadelphia 76ers are set to be without Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, Lonnie Walker IV, Kelly Oubre Jr., Andre Drummond, Adem Bona, Jared McCain, Kyle Lowry and Eric Gordon for tonight’s game. Philadelphia will continue limping to the finish line with unfamiliar names looking to cling to an NBA opportunity rounding out their roster. These injury issues have been especially evident in the Sixers’ defense. Philadelphia has lost 18 of their last 21 games giving up 121.7 points per game during this stretch. This rate ranks 28th in the NBA and they also have allowed 132.5 points per game across their past four matchups.
Trae Young continues to be at the heart of all the production for the Hawks with his 24.1 points and league-leading 11.4 assists per game. He has recorded over 37.5 combined points and assists in 29 of the 65 games he has played this season. This will be his first matchup against the Sixers this year but he should welcome this type of defensive matchup.
Young’s ability as a playmaker is especially noteworthy with him sure to be at the top of the Sixers’ defensive priorities. He is more than capable of taking over the game as a scorer but has a counter if this option is not on the table. The Hawks’ supporting cast has shown some encouraging production in recent games with six players outside of Young averaging double digits in March. Philadelphia does not have a legitimate rim protector available and Young’s ability to throw lobs should be especially effective. Expect the Sixers to bleed points throughout this game and for Young to be at the epicenter of the production by recording over 37.5 combined points and assists tonight.
Trae Young to Record 15+ Assists (+380)
To take it a step further, expect Trae Young to add to his league-leading assist total in a major way tonight. The four-time All-Star is already leading the league with 11.4 assists per game and has recorded 15+ assists in 14 different games this season.
Across the past 24 games, the Sixers rank 29th in opponents’ points per game and 27th in opponents’ field goal percentage. Their lack of resistance at the rim has been especially notable with Joel Embiid, Andre Drummond, and Adem Bona each out injured. Guerschon Yabusele has exceeded expectations on the overall season but has been a bit overexposed with his expanded role when asked to be a full-time center.
While Clint Capela remains sidelined for the Hawks, Onyeka Okungwu has been solid in his absence and fills the skillset that is necessary to play next to Young. Expect the Hawks to attack in pick-and-roll opportunities often and for Young to have great success setting his teammates up around the rim. Count on lob passes being a regular part of the Hawks’ attack in this matchup and for Young to capitalize whenever the Sixers become disconnected defensively.
The +380 odds rightfully indicate this is a big swing, but it is tough to have any optimism for the Sixers turning around the defensive shortcomings. Count on Young having control of this game and for his playmaking abilities to shine tonight.
