Gunnar Henderson to begin season on IL

Gunnar Henderson has been dealing with an intercostal strain since February and will begin the season on the IL. While this is discouraging news for the Orioles, Baltimore’s GM Mike Elias told the media he is hoping Henderson is out “days, not weeks.” The 23-year-old was also able to participate in batting practice this Saturday, so there is certainly hope Henderson returns quickly.

The shortstop is coming off an impressive campaign last season with a .281 batting average, 92 RBIs, 37 home runs and 21 stolen bases. Henderson’s impressive play earned him his first All-Star selection and he finished fourth in the AL MVP voting. With Henderson unavailable, Jackson Holliday should take over at shortstop for the Orioles.

Despite Henderson being sidelined, Baltimore is a -120 ML favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook for its Opening Day matchup vs. the Blue Jays on Thursday.
