Carlos Carrasco makes the Yankees’ Opening Day roster

As expected after his strong spring training and given the Yankees’ injury issues in the starting rotation, Carlos Carrasco will be added to the Yankees MLB roster ahead of the opt-out in his minor-league deal on Saturday.

Carrasco has allowed just three runs on eight hits in spring training and has worked his way up to five innings. He held the Braves scoreless in his five-inning start on Wednesday, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three.

Last season, Carrasco went back to Cleveland, where he started his career before a three-year stint with the Mets. It didn’t go well for the veteran, though, as he went 3-10 in 21 starts with a 5.64 ERA, 4.93 FIP and 7.7 K/9. He also struggled in his last season with the Mets, posting a 6.80 ERA and 5.86 FIP in 20 starts in 2023.

While it may have looked like the end for Carrasco, he has rejuvenated his career with a strong spring training.

Fantasy baseball impact

Carrasco will likely open the season as the Yankees’ fifth starter behind Carlos Rodon, Max Fried, Marcus Stroman and Will Warren. The veteran could be a good source of wins and strikeouts early in the season based on his success this spring, although it’s hard to see his ERA and FIP flourishing in Yankee Stadium after the last few disappointing campaigns.

The Yankees will make room for him on the roster by placing Clarke Schmidt (shoulder) on the injured list to start the season.
