Kentucky vs. Troy preview, prediction
Mark Pope’s squad boasts one of the most dynamic offenses in the country, led by versatile five-man Amari Williams (9.1 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 3.9 APG), whose ability to distribute the ball from the top of the key makes Kentucky’s offense flow effortlessly. The Wildcats are stacked with weapons all over the floor, from Koby Brea (42.2% from three) to Otega Oweh (14.7 PPG) to Andrew Carr (13.5 PPG, 6.1 RPG), making them a matchup nightmare. As of late, Kentucky has seen improvements on the defensive end, ranking No. 16 in defensive efficiency over the last month of the regular season. Their ability to force turnovers (15.1 per game) while shooting 75.7% from the free-throw line gives them an edge in both transition and half-court settings.
However, the Wildcats’ march to the tournament has been complicated by injuries. Kerr Kriisa (foot) and Jaxson Robinson (wrist) are out for the season, and Lamont Butler is playing through a shoulder injury. These absences have forced Amari Williams to assume point guard duties, which limits Kentucky’s ideal offensive ceiling. Despite this, Kentucky’s offensive firepower, backed by their strong defensive metrics, should still make them a formidable opponent.
Troy is an intriguing Cinderella pick, having finished the season on a hot streak, winning 11 of their final 12 games, including an ASUN Tournament championship. The Trojans thrive on offensive rebounding, ranking No. 15 nationally in offensive rebound percentage (38.6%) and posting a +5.1 rebound margin over the last five games. Defensively, they’ve been strong, particularly around the rim, holding opponents to just 43.6% shooting on two-pointers since February 1, which ranks sixthnationally. However, their offensive inefficiencies (29.9% from three, No. 306 nationally) could prove costly against a Kentucky team that can stretch the floor and dominate inside.
Troy vs. Kentucky pick, best bet
Despite their defensive capabilities, Troy’s limited scoring options are a concern. They’ll need a big game from Tayton Conerway (16.3 PPG, 7.0 RPG) and Myles Rigsby (14.1 PPG, 5.2 RPG) to keep pace with Kentucky’s more balanced attack. The Trojans’ struggles from deep (just 29.9% from three-point range) and their lack of a truly dynamic playmaker could make it difficult to break down Kentucky’s defense. In their ASUN Tournament run, Troy managed to limit their opponents to just 40.3% shooting from the field, but their offense was still inconsistent, averaging just 1.095 points per possession.
Kentucky’s overall talent and depth—regardless of injury woes, and combined with potent offense & steady defense—should be too much for Troy to overcome against the number. The Trojans’ lack of size (Kentucky owns a +5.1 rebounding margin compared to Troy’s -1.2) and limited shooting (Troy’s 29.9% from three, compared to Kentucky’s 42.2% from deep) make it difficult for them to keep pace with the Wildcats. Kentucky’s recent improvements on defense (No. 16 in adjusted defensive efficiency) and their ability to dictate the tempo with a fourth-ranked offense (1.227 points per possession) should see them comfortably advance.
Wildcats pounce and stay ahead.
Best bet: Kentucky -11.5 (-105)
