This matchup is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing—if not altogether headline-drawing—first-round clashes. UCLA, with its deep offensive arsenal and ability to score from all angles, faces off against a Utah State team that thrives on disruption and precision shooting. The Aggies’ methodical offense and unpredictable zone defense will test the Bruins’ balance and push them to avoid defensive lapses. UCLA vs. Utah State preview, prediction
UCLA isn’t a team that you sleep on, but don’t expect them to glide through this game without a hitch. They come into this tournament with a high-powered offense, ranking 24th nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency (1.208 points per possession) over the last seven games. Tyler Bilodeau (14.7 PPG, 41.2% from three) has been a sharp shooter for the Bruins, and Eric Dailey Jr. (12.8 PPG, 39.2% from three) isn’t far behind, contributing consistently from deep. Skyy Clark (11.6 PPG, 3.9 APG) rounds out their perimeter attack, and together, this trio has helped UCLA convert an absurd 40.4% of their three-point attempts in the last month of the regular season.
Despite all that glorious offensive firepower, however, they’re not exactly airtight defensively. UCLA ranks outside the top 175 in effective field goal percentage defense and at No. 203 in two-point defense. Their vulnerability in the paint is glaring, and teams have taken full advantage of it, particularly those with a strong interior presence. Add in the fact that UCLA shoots just 70.5% from the free-throw line (No. 241 nationally), and tight games become a serious concern.
Enter Utah State, a team that can match firepower for firepower, particularly with their transition game. The Aggies’ offense is humming, ranking 18th in adjusted offensive efficiency. They’re led by Mason Falslev (17.9 PPG, 5.2 APG), who has been the engine for Utah State, playing with both poise and aggression. Alongside him, Ian Martinez (16.4 PPG, 5.3 RPG) can explode for 20+ points on any given night, with the ability to light it up from beyond the arc (37.9% from three in the last five games). Utah State’s offense runs through their versatile lineup, with players like Drake Allen (8.3 PPG, 4.1 APG) and Dexter Akanno (11.2 PPG, 39.1% from three) providing additional scoring punch.
However, as good as their offense is, they’re far from flawless on the other end. Utah State ranks 120th in defensive efficiency, struggling particularly in defending the paint, where they allow 51.2% shooting inside. They also rank 274th in defensive rebounding percentage, a weakness that UCLA could exploit with Aidy Mara (8.1 PPG, 7.4 RPG) anchoring the glass for the Bruins, who rank 72nd in offensive rebounding percentage over the last month.
Utah State at UCLA pick, best bet
While UCLA’s defense may be suspect, they’re dangerous in transition (ranked 9th in the nation in fast-break points, averaging 18.2 per game) and possess just enough grit to keep the game from getting out of hand. The Bruins force turnovers on nearly 19% of opponent possessions (No. 37 in the nation), and they’ve been solid enough at applying pressure. Their defense doesn’t generate a ton of steals (ranking 158th in steals per game), but their ability to force bad shots (opponents shoot just 44.7% from the field, No. 77 nationally) and limit second-chance opportunities (UCLA ranks 72nd in offensive rebounding percentage) has been key.
On the other hand, Utah State’s aggressive zone defense can cause issues for teams that rely on quick ball movement and outside shooting. But with UCLA’s shooters able to stretch the floor (they shoot 38.5% from three, No. 24 nationally) and Mara’s presence in the paint (averaging 7.4 rebounds per game), the Aggies’ zone may get broken down by the Bruins’ balanced attack.
At -5.5, UCLA is the pick. The Aggies have the tools to make things interesting, but UCLA’s offensive depth (led by Bilodeau, Dailey Jr., and Clark) and rebounding edge (with Mara’s presence) will push them to a win. Utah State may keep it close with their transition offense, but UCLA’s scoring balance and ability to exploit Utah State’s defensive lapses will ultimately carry them through.
Best bet: UCLA -5.5 (-110)
