St.John’s vs. Omaha prediction, pick for March Madness Round of 64

For the first time since the 2014-15 season, the St. John’s Red Storm are in the NCAA March Madness tournament. St. John’s is the sixth team Hall-of-Fame head coach Rick Pitino led to the tournament. The Red Storm appeared in the First Four in 2018-19 but didn’t advance to the official bracket. This is Pitino’s first time in March Madness since the 2022-23 tournament, and he hasn’t won a game in this tourney since 2017.

St. John’s will play the Summit conference champions, the Omaha Mavericks, at 9:45 p.m. ET on Thursday. The Mavericks are on a six-game win streak to enter the tournament. Here is my pick for Thursday’s round of 64 matchup between No. 2 St. John’s vs. No. 15 Omaha.

St. John’s vs. Omaha (9:45 p.m. ET)

St. John’s best player, RJ Luis Jr., has had a great season, averaging 18.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Zuby Ejiofor has increased his scoring average by over 10 points per contest. Ejiofor has totaled 53 points in his previous two games and has continued to develop his offensive game throughout the season.

Although Omaha has a player in Maquel Sutton, who scored 19.1 points per game, they haven’t played this level of competition throughout the season. St. John’s is a -18.5 favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook in this matchup against Omaha. The Red Storm have won 19 of their last 20 games and are currently on a nine-game win streak. St. John’s previous three wins were all won by 16-plus points, and each of them was in the Big East tournament.

The last time a Pitino-led team was a No. 2 seed was in 2014, when he lost to Michigan in the second round. The Red Storm is peaking at the right time, and a Sweet Sixteen could be in their future for the first time since 1999.
