Report: Boston Celtics sold to Bill Chisholm

Following their league-leading 18th NBA championship victory last season, Celtics’ majority owner Wyc Grousbeck shocked the basketball world and announced that his family would be selling the team. Since then, there have been many rumors of potential buyers, including Jeff Bezos and the Fenway Group, but ESPN’s Shams Charania is reporting Thursday morning that Bill Chisholm, a managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, will be purchasing the Boston Celtics for a whopping $6.1 billion. This is the largest sale for a sports franchise ever in North America, surpassing the Washington Commanders, who were purchased for 6.05 billion this past June.

Chisholm is a Massachusetts native who has been a Celtics fan his entire life. Despite the sale, Grousbeck will reportedly remain governor of the Celtics through the 2027-28 season. In 2002, the Grousbeck family notably purchased the Celtics for only $360 million.

After winning their 18th banner this past season, the Celtics inked many of their core players to long-term deals and with Boston having Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White all under contract through the 2028-29 season, the franchise has high hopes for more championships in the next few years.

At 50-19 this season, the Celtics are the No.2 seed in the Eastern Conference, and they carry the second-best odds to win the 2024-25 NBA championship this summer at +225 on DraftKings Sportsbook.
