Samford at George Mason (Wednesday 7pm ET)
George Mason had a terrific season in the A-10, falling just short in the title game against VCU. This is a gritty squad, and I expect the Patriots to take the NIT very seriously. They’ll open up play at home, where they’re 17-1 this season, matched up against a far inferior Samford roster. The Bulldogs limp into tournament play, losers of five of their last eight games — and two of the three wins came as double digit favorites. Samford is 0-4 as an underdog this season, and I don’t expect to see a win come on Wednesday.
As I wrote up on Tuesday, I already have Oklahoma State (which beat Wichita State) parlayed with UCI. So I’ll be pairing George Mason with one of my favorite moneyline pieces in the NCAA Tournament — Gonzaga over Georgia. However, if you want to keep this to the NIT, you could pair the Patriots with UCI. Here’s what I wrote about the Anteaters in my previous article.
UCI would probably be a pretty popular underdog had they made the NCAA Tournament, and should have full motivation here in the NIT. The Anteaters went 25-3 as a favorite this season, and 10-2 at home. Northern Colorado got a few wins as underdogs this season, but mostly in the early going when markets were softer. The Bears haven’t been priced as a dog of more than one-point in over two months, and also haven’t won a game as a dog of longer than four points this season. I’ll take UCI to keep that streak alive in the NIT.
NIT Pick: George Mason/Gonzaga ML Parlay (-115) 1-unit
North Alabama at Bradley (Wednesday 8pm ET)
The number on this game has been all over the place. Bradley was laying 5.5, but dipped as low as 2.5, as some of the top players initially decided to opt out of the game. That was surprising to me given this isn’t an elite program that settled for the NIT. This tournament could really benefit the Braves, and I guess someone relayed that to them. Some of the players had a change in heart, and will now be suiting up for this one.
North Alabama boasts a 16-1 home record this season, but was a completely different team on the road. The Lions just 7-9 in true road games, including 3-7 as an underdog. I like Bradley to rally around the decision to go for it in the NIT, and take care of an inferior North Alabama team.
NIT Pick: Bradley -3.5 (-115) 1-unit
