How Often Does a No. 1 Seed Win the NCAA Tournament?

When March Madness arrives, No. 1 seeds are expected to dominate. They’ve been the best teams all season, earning their top spots, but does that translate to winning it all? Let’s break down the historical data and what it means for your bracket.

What Percent of No. 1 Seeds Win the NCAA Tournament?

Historically, No. 1 seeds have been claimed NCAA Tournament Champions 64.1% of the time (25 of 39 tournaments since 1985 – when the field expanded to 64 teams).

If you recall, the tournament field later expanded to 68 teams in 2011, and No. 1 seeds have been even better, claiming 9 of the last 13 titles for a 69.2% title win rate.

Despite that, top seeds have made the Final Four slightly less frequently since 2011, and we’ll take a look at that below.

How Many No. 1 Seeds Make the Final Four?

Since 1985, No. 1 seeds have produced 62 of the 156 Final Four spots, which comes out to 39.7%

That averages to about 1.58 top seeds in the Final Four each year. By comparison, No. 2 seeds have made 32 appearances, while No. 3 and No. 4 seeds have reached the Final Four just 17 and 15 times, respectively.

Since the field expanded to 68 teams in 2011, No. 1 seeds have reached the Final Four at a slightly lower rate, accounting for 17 of 52 spots, or 32.7%. In three of the last five tournaments, one or zero No. 1 seeds have made it that far.

What Does This Mean for Your 2025 Bracket?

Historical trends don’t mean much for your bracket. Every No. 1 seed is built differently. A better approach is finding which teams—No. 1 seed or not—are overvalued or undervalued relative to their advancement odds. Then, factor in your scoring system and pool size to determine how much risk to take.
