Eight games between 16 teams are set to tip off on a busy Saturday across the NBA. Among the matchups to watch, the Pacers will face Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks in a postseason rematch. Later, Steph Curry and the Warriors host Karl-Anthony Towns and the Knicks in primetime. D’Angelo Russell less than 2.5 three-pointers made
The Nets face an uphill battle tonight against the defending champion Celtics. If Brooklyn has any hope at pulling off the upset, they’ll need a great performance from D’Angelo Russell. The guard, acquired from the Lakers in December, has been a stabilizing force in the back court. Over his last 22 games, the former All-Star has averaged 13.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists.
One thing that hasn’t gone in Russell’s favor is his efficiency. During his second stint with Brooklyn, the 29-year-old has shot 38.3% from the field and 30.5% from three-point range. It won’t get any easier on Saturday against an elite Celtics defense. Opponents have connected on 34.8% of their shots from beyond the arc vs. Boston, the third-lowest mark in basketball. With that in mind, three treys from DLo in this one feels like wishful thinking.
Malik Beasley less than 14.5 points
Speaking of former Lakers, Malik Beasley has enjoyed a bounce-back season with the Pistons. Through 67 games, the guard has posted 16.3 points on 44.0% shooting from the field (42.1 3PT%). On a Detroit team that lacks secondary scorers behind Cade Cunningham, the veteran’s contributions are invaluable.
As good as Beasley has been, the guard’s scoring output varies from night to night. Saturday’s matchup with Oklahoma City isn’t very promising for a streaky shooter. The Thunder have surrendered the fewest points per game (103.2) and the lowest opponent three-point percentage (33.7%). Beasley has scored 15 points just once over his last five appearances. It’s difficult to picture that trend changing against basketball’s best defense.
Alperen Sengun more than 5.5 assists
On a team filled with depth, Alperen Sengun has a strong claim as Houston’s best player. The big man earned his first career All-Star Game selection this season, thanks to an all-around offensive skillset. Through 63 games, the 22-year-old has recorded 19.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists while shooting 50.1% from the field.
The Turkish center is set up nicely for another dominant outing tonight. Even if Sengun struggles to make shots, he should thrive as a passer. This season, the Bulls have allowed 29.1 assists per game, second-most in the association. When these teams last met in November, Sengun recorded 11 assists en route to a triple-double. A similar stat line isn’t out of the question on Saturday.
Taurean Prince more than 3.5 rebounds
The Bucks are a two-man show, led by the duo of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. On most nights, Milwaukee’s odds of winning hinge on which role players can step up. Taurean Prince isn’t a household name, but he’s capable of knocking down some shots and playing quality defense. This season, the forward has averaged 8.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
While those numbers don’t stand out, Prince has started 57 games for head coach Doc Rivers. That usually leads to a workload of close to 30 minutes a night. Against the Pacers, expect the veteran to have a productive day on the glass. Opponents have snagged 53.0 rebounds per game against Indiana this season, tenth-most in basketball. Prince has recorded four or more boards in six of his last eight appearances. Milwaukee’s three-and-D forward is well-positioned to clear this total tonight.
OG Anunoby more than 18.5 points
Life without Jalen Brunson hasn’t been too bad for the Knicks. New York has won the last two games of its West Coast road trip, thanks in large part to the play of OG Anunoby. The two-way wing isn’t the most consistent player, but he’s been at his best recently. Over the forward’s last five games, he’s put up 21.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists. That stretch includes a 29-point performance against the Warriors on March 4th.
The Knicks will face Golden State once again on Saturday, this time at the Chase Center. The Warriors play solid defense, but most of their attention will likely be on Karl-Anthony Towns. That should leave Anunoby open for some three-point attempts, where he’s shot 37.2% from beyond the arc during his last five outings. The 27-year-old, as New York’s current number two option, should handle plenty of touches on offense tonight.
Quinten Post more than 1.5 three-pointers made
We’ll stay in The Bay, where the Warriors will hope to break down an erratic Knicks defense. If there’s any notable weakness for Golden State this season, it’s down low. Head coach Steve Kerr has shuffled through several centers, frequently opting for a committee approach at the position. Second-round pick Quinten Post has gained some momentum lately, starting in each of his last three appearances. Through 28 games, the rookie has posted 8.4 points and 3.9 rebounds while shooting 45.5% from the field.
If Post has any strength, it’s as a shooter. The Boston College product has knocked down 41.7% of his attempts from three-point range this season. That should come in handy on Saturday against New York’s subpar perimeter defense. Opponents have connected on 37.4% of their shots from deep against the Knicks, the second-worst mark in basketball. As long as Kerr keeps Post on the floor, he should find some success from long distance.
