UC Irvine vs. Cal Poly prediction, pick for Big West Semifinal

Updated:

By: Dan Johnson

The day’s winding down, but we’re not done yet. UC Irvine and Cal Poly tip off at 11:30 p.m. ET, and if you’re still locked in, you know the drill—it’s Big West basketball, it’s funky, and it’s probably going to get out of hand late. One team looks built to make a real run, the other is hanging on for dear life, and by the time this one’s over, we’ll either feel brilliant or wonder why we put our faith in a team that can’t rebound. I’ll hit you with my lean below in my preview, prediction, pick, and best bet for this semifinal college basketball game between UC Irvine and Cal Poly in the Big West tournament tonight.

Here’s how I intend to play the best game of Friday’s slate. I’ll be picking individual games throughout the week, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more to-the-minute, point-of-need analyses and plays throughout conference tournament week.

UC Irvine vs. Cal Poly preview, prediction

UC Irvine and Cal Poly meet for the third time this season, and history hasn’t been kind to the Mustangs. The Anteaters have already handled them twice—98-89 in overtime in early January, then a 101-71 blowout two weeks later. The second meeting was a full-scale dismantling, dominating the glass, forcing bad shots, and completely taking Cal Poly out of its comfort zone. With a trip to the Big West title game on the line, UC Irvine enters as a 9.5-point favorite, and the numbers suggest they have everything needed to make it three straight.

UC Irvine has built its success on defensive discipline and rebounding. The Anteaters allow just 65.6 PPG (best in the Big West) while holding opponents to a brutal 39.1% shooting mark, making them the conference’s toughest defense by a wide margin. Offensively, they don’t play at a blistering pace, but they’re efficient and calculated, averaging 75.7 PPG on 45.5% shooting. The difference-maker? They control the boards. UC Irvine ranks first in the Big West in rebounding margin (+4.2), and that’s exactly what fueled their 30-point demolition of Cal Poly in the second meeting. They hammered the Mustangs on the glass (+15 rebounding edge), created second-chance looks, and completely stifled Cal Poly’s ability to play their preferred up-tempo style.

The matchup that could decide it all, however, hangs among the trees: Bent Leuchten’s presence in the paint. The 7-footer has been UC Irvine’s most dominant interior force, averaging 12.5 points and 7.8 rebounds while shooting 58% from the floor. He was a nightmare matchup for Cal Poly in their last meeting, pulling in 10 rebounds and altering shots at the rim all night. With Cal Poly’s rebounding struggles, he should have another big night controlling the glass and limiting second-chance looks.

Cal Poly at UC Irvine pick, best bet

So where does this leave us—right. The spread (-9.5) is big, but UC Irvine has already beaten this team by 30. If Cal Poly has an outlier shooting night, they could hang for a while, I guess. But their lack of rebounding and defense makes that an extremely tough ask. If Irvine plays its game—controlling possessions, forcing tough shots, and winning the rebounding battle—this one likely gets out of hand in the second half, just like their last meeting.

By the time this one’s over, most of the country will be asleep, but we’ll be wide awake, either cashing in or cursing missed free throws. UC Irvine looks too strong on the glass and too disciplined defensively—so if we’re trusting anyone to close the night out right, it’s the Anteaters.

Best bet: UC Irvine -9.5 (-115)
