The Illini, fresh off a 106-94 shootout win over Iowa, are playing their best offensive basketball of the season. Meanwhile, Maryland has quietly put together an impressive late-season push, winning five straight and controlling games with their elite rebounding and interior defense. With the Terrapins favored by just 1.5 points, this game comes down to whether Illinois can maintain its offensive rhythm or if Maryland’s defense asserts itself again.
The Terrapins have leaned on Julian Reese, who has been a dominant force inside, averaging 16.8 points and 9.7 rebounds over his last six games while shooting 61% from the field. His 19-point, 11-rebound effort against Northwestern in their last outing set the tone for what Maryland does best—control the paint and dictate tempo. The Terps have held opponents to just 41.2% shooting over their last five games, using their size and physicality to force teams into tough shots. Illinois struggled with this in the first matchup, getting outrebounded by 11 and shooting just 39% from the floor in the loss. If that trend repeats, Maryland could cruise again.
But Illinois looks like a different team now. Terrence Shannon Jr. has been nearly unstoppable, averaging 24.6 points over his last five, and his 31-point explosion against Iowa highlighted just how dangerous the Illini can be when their perimeter shots are falling. Illinois is shooting 38.4% from deep in its last six games—up from just 33.2% earlier in Big Ten play—and that increased efficiency could be the key to breaking down Maryland’s defense. If Shannon and Marcus Domask (18.2 PPG over his last five) get rolling early, the Illini have the firepower to flip the script from January’s blowout.

Turnovers might be the game’s swing factor. Illinois has been loose with the ball, averaging 13.9 turnovers per game in its last five, and Maryland’s defense thrives on forcing mistakes. The Terrapins have generated 7.8 steals per game in that stretch, turning defense into transition buckets—just like they did in the first meeting. If Illinois can limit giveaways and play a cleaner game, they have the offensive firepower to pull off covering this number, short as it is.

The Terps have already dominated this matchup once, and their defense, rebounding, and ability to force turnovers all give them an edge in a tournament setting. Illinois has been scorching hot offensively, but if their shooting dips even slightly, Maryland’s physicality and half-court defense should take over. Plus, Shannon’s high-usage style means if he struggles, Illinois has no real second gear—whereas Maryland can win in multiple ways.
An outright Maryland moneyline play feels even safer than hitting the number. If this stays close, the Terrapins have more ways to win late, whether it’s through second-chance points, getting stops, or forcing Illinois into tough half-court possessions. If Illinois catches fire from three, they might keep it close enough to cover, but Maryland straight-up still feels like the right side.
