Houston has been a machine all season, winning 24 of its last 25 games, controlling the glass, and forcing teams into absolute misery offensively. They hold opponents to just 43.6% shooting inside the arc, a top-five mark nationally, and their defensive efficiency is among the best in the sport. But here’s where things get interesting—J’Wan Roberts’ status is in question after spraining his ankle in the quarterfinals against Colorado. If he can’t go or isn’t 100%, Houston’s biggest strength—interior defense and rebounding—takes a hit. That’s a factor worth watching, especially against a BYU team that forces defenses to rotate and close out constantly with its ball movement and deep shooting.
BYU lit Iowa State on fire in the quarterfinals, hitting a Big 12 Tournament record 18 threes in a 96-92 shootout. Their ability to push pace and rain from deep has been the backbone of their nine-game winning streak, and when they’re clicking, they look like one of the most dangerous teams in the country. Richie Saunders has been on a tear, scoring 20+ points in five of his last seven games, while Dallin Hall’s playmaking has been crucial in keeping BYU’s offense humming. They don’t rely on isolation or heavy post-ups, meaning Houston’s defensive physicality could be somewhat neutralized if the Cougars (Provo edition) keep moving the ball and hitting shots.

Here’s the dilemma: BYU’s three-point-heavy attack is high-variance. If they hit at 40%+ like they did against Iowa State, this game is tight all the way. So, where’s the edge? The 6.5 feels a little high, given Houston’s potential fatigue and the unknown with Roberts. BYU is a rhythm team, and they have every reason to come in firing, knowing they need to hit shots early to make this a game. If they’re hot, they can absolutely cover and even steal this outright. But if they come out cold, Houston could grab control and never let go.
Betting against Houston is terrifying, but BYU’s ability to space the floor and their confidence right now make them a real problem. As for the total? Set at 134.5, it all depends on who dictates pace. If BYU pushes tempo, this sails over. If Houston drags them into the mud, it crawls under.
