The SEC Tournament’s second round brings a crucial heater between two teams with plenty to prove before Selection Sunday. Oklahoma enters this game having built its identity on disciplined defense and methodical execution, grinding out close wins in a tough conference slate. Meanwhile, Kentucky’s season has been defined by explosive scoring bursts and elite shot-making, though defensive lapses have kept them from reaching their full potential. Let’s hit my preview, prediction, pick, and best bet for this quarterfinal college basketball game between Louisville and Stanford in the ACC tournament tonight.
Here’s how I intend to play what might be Thursday’s most-watched game. I’ll be picking individual games throughout the week, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Kentucky vs Oklahoma preview, prediction
Oklahoma’s success this season has been driven by a defense that ranks 23rd nationally in adjusted efficiency. They hold opponents to just 40.7% shooting from the field. The sooners have particularly excelled at defending the three-point line—key, here, against the Wildcats—limiting teams to 30.9% from beyond the arc. Kentucky relies heavily on perimeter shooting, ranking 14th nationally in three-point percentage (38.2%); tick an advantage Oklahoma’s way.
The Sooners’ methodical approach has also helped them grind out wins in close games, going 8-3 in contests decided by six points or fewer. In their recent 71-65 victory over Florida, Oklahoma showcased its defensive discipline, forcing 14 turnovers and holding the Gators to just 4-of-21 from deep. The Sooners don’t blow teams out, but they make every possession a battle—an attribute that could keep this game within reach against Kentucky.
The Wildcats, however, have the firepower to break down even the most disciplined defenses. They boast the seventh-most efficient offense in the country and have four players averaging double figures, led by Rob Dillingham’s electric scoring ability (16.2 PPG on 48.5% shooting). Antonio Reeves has also been a force from beyond the arc, hitting 41.7% of his threes while averaging 17.1 points per game.
In their recent 94-86 win over Auburn, Kentucky’s offensive talent was on full display, as they shot 56.3% from the floor and turned 12 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points. If the Wildcats control the tempo and push Oklahoma into a track meet, they have the weapons to outscore the Sooners comfortably. But their Achilles’ heel has been defensive lapses—Kentucky has allowed opponents to shoot 47.2% on two-pointers, ranking outside the top 150 in defensive efficiency. Against a disciplined Oklahoma team that capitalizes on mistakes, that could be a problem.
Oklahoma at Kentucky pick, best bet
We’ve written about Kentucky’s efficiency on the offensive side of the court before. We’ve bet on it. We’ve won on it. But all of these performances have been notably above-average for this team. Could be a right-development-right-time situation as March approaches, but I don’t think we’re betting on exactly the same Wildcats team tonight that beat Auburn, as mentioned above.
So, let’s just check in on fundamentals, shall we? While Kentucky’s season average indicates better ball control, their recent performance suggests potential vulnerabilities in this area. In a recent loss to Auburn, the Wildcats committed 18 turnovers, with key players Amari Williams and Lamont Butler accounting for 11 of them. Oklahoma committed 13 turnovers against Missouri, slightly above their average, and 11.2 against Texas, staying in line with their season rate, showing consistency in ball control.
But here’s the kicker, for me: Oklahoma has averaged around 6.5 steals per game this season, but in recent matchups, that number has dipped slightly. They managed just five steals against Missouri and four against Texas—consistent with that slight decline in their defensive pressure we mentioned above.
Mark Pope to the moon!
Best bet: Kentucky -6.5 (-110)
