Vanderbilt vs. Texas preview, prediction for SEC Tournament Round 1
Texas and Vanderbilt square off today in a game that could come down to which team plays closer to its best version. On paper, these teams are nearly identical in scoring production—Texas averages 74.5 points per game (PPG), while Vanderbilt sits at 76.2 PPG. But when you dig into recent performances, Texas has been the steadier team.
The Longhorns’ offense has been up and down, posting just 68 points against Tennessee but exploding for 82 against Kentucky. Their defense, allowing 69.3 PPG on the season, has also shown flashes of dominance—just ask Georgia, who Texas held to 62 points recently. But inconsistency creeps in at times, like when Alabama put up 75 against them.
Vanderbilt, meanwhile, is a team that lives and dies by its offense. They’ve shown they can score in bunches, like their 81-point showing against LSU, but they’ve also sputtered, mustering just 68 against Georgia. Defensively, the Commodores allow 71.8 PPG—more than Texas—and their volatility has been evident. They held South Carolina to just 65 points in one game, then let Florida pour in 78 in another.
Texas at Vanderbilt pick, best bet
Ultimately, Texas has shown a more stable two-way presence, and in a game that will likely come down to defensive execution, they hold the edge. Expect the Longhorns to capitalize on Vanderbilt’s defensive lapses—of which there are indeed many, albeit fewer lately—and come away with a hard-fought win. Most importantly: they’ll cover in the process.
