Royals SS Bobby Witt Jr. hit by pitch, avoids bone fracture

During Wednesday’s Spring Training game, Royals SS Bobby Witt Jr. was hit on the left forearm by a 96-mph fastball. X-rays were negative and the official diagnosis was a contusion. Whew.

There are still 13 Spring Training games left to be played, so there’s plenty of time before the start of the regular season. That said, any kind of injury to the consensus number two overall player in fantasy drafts must be talked about.

Witt’s career arc has been one of extraordinary magnitude. During his rookie season, he hit 20 home runs, stole 30 bases, scored 82 runs and drove in 80 while slashing .254/.294/.428. He also tallied a .174 ISO, 4.7% walk rate and 21.4% strikeout rate in 632 plate appearances.

He has improved in every statistical category over the last two seasons, culminating in 32 home runs, 31 stolen bases, 125 runs and 109 RBI with a .332/.389/.588 slash line last season. The walk rate was 8%, strikeout rate 15% and ISO was .256.
