Following a disappointing 2024-25 season, Daniel Jones has found his new home. The quarterback signed a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday morning, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The deal, worth up to $17.7 million, signals a potential quarterback competition in Indianapolis. Former first-round pick Anthony Richardson struggled last season, raising questions about his future with the Colts.
Jones’ career has been inconsistent at best so far. To the surprise of many, the Duke alum was drafted sixth overall by the Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft. Sloppy mistakes maligned the passer during his first three seasons as a professional; his 49 turnovers were the third-most in the league during that time. However, Jones did manage to lead New York to the playoffs during the 2022-23 campaign, highlighted by a Wildcard Weekend victory over the Vikings.
Since inking a four-year, $160 million extension prior to the 2023-24 season, Jones’ production has fallen off a cliff. Injuries have limited the quarterback to just 16 total games, hampering his already limited throwing ability. During that time, he’s recorded just 2,979 passing yards, ten passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions. In a move that seemed inevitable, New York cut the 27-year-old last season following a 2-8 start; he signed with the Vikings as a backup shortly thereafter.
Jones now joins a Colts team that has had major issues under center. Danny Dimes hasn’t been a model of consistency, but he should (at worst) provide solid depth behind Richardson. Over 11 games played, the Florida product threw for 1,814 yards, eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions on a 47.7% completion percentage. Regardless of who earns the starting job, Indianapolis should have one of the NFL’s most intriguing training camp battles this summer.
