Big 12 Conference Tournament Winner
No doubt, this season was a letdown for Scott Drew and company. After opening the season with a Top-10 ranking, Baylor is likely in the NCAA Tournament field, but could be considered close to the bubble. The Bears could really benefit from a strong showing in Kansas City, and while the roster is thin, the top-end talent to make a run is there.
While Baylor’s had its struggles within the regular season, there have been a lot of moving pieces due to injury. Again, while the Bears don’t run as deep as they’d like, a rotation has been established that has led to some recent success. While they didn’t get the massive win they wanted on Saturday night, Baylor took Houston, a near lock to land a 1-seed, right down to the wire. The talent to beat any team in the conference is there, but doing so while playing everyday becomes difficult without many real bench pieces to work into the roation.
Given the way the bracket fell and the odds we’re getting on Baylor, I think we have enough to make a small bet here. Baylor’s tournament opener will be on Wednesday evening, where it’ll be favored over the winner of Arizona State and Kansas State. A win would put them up against a very good Texas Tech team, clearly the cream of the crop on the bottom half of the bracket, and a team Baylor lost to in the regular season.
Baylor was pretty consistent in one area this season — it beat bad teams and lost to good teams. It’s a tall order to ask Baylor to rip through Texas Tech and then the likely winner of a Kansas vs. Arizona game to reach the Championship Game, but that’s why we’re getting 50-1. I do like that the Bears avoid Houston, BYU and Iowa State on their half of the bracket, and could only meet those teams in the final.
Hey, if Baylor taps out early a loses us some pizza money, so be it. But with the upside of this team, I’ll take a crack.
