No matter the records, college basketball fans always have this one circled on the calendar. Let’s breakdown the ACC regular season finale between the Blue Devils and Tar Heels.
Duke at UNC (6:30pm ET)
At this point, it feels like even with a bad loss in the ACC Tournament, Duke is still a lock for a No. 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament. The only questions is, if the Blue Devils were to run the table through the rest of the ACC schedule, is there any chance they can surpass Auburn for the No. 1 overall seed?
Duke has been discarding ACC competition in conference play, including a 17-point win over UNC in Durham. More impressively, the Blue Devils are 7-2 ATS as road favorites here. So it’s pretty tough to come up with a reason to fade Duke here, but I can come up with plenty of reasons I want to back North Carolina in a massive spot for this team.
The Heels got off to a rough start to the season, but all metrics point to significant improvement of late. UNC comes in covering five straight games, and, like Duke, riding a six-game winning streak. The late season push for Carolina has it right on the bubble after a disappointing start, and no doubt, a win over Duke would be enough to push the Heels into the field.
While UNC is a concerning 2-6-1 ATS as an underdog this season (1-8 SU), all of those occasions have come in road or neutral situations. This will be the first time on the season that the Tar Heels, who are 12-2 on their home floor, will be priced as a home dog. As talented as Duke is, this is a desperation spot for a veteran UNC backcourt to play its best game of the season. I think we see Carolina bring its A-game and keep this one respectable.
