Maryland and Michigan are set to square off in Ann Arbor on Wednesday night, in a monster matchup of teams near the top of the Big Ten standings.

Maryland at Michigan (6:30pm ET)

On the surface, this appears to be a spot to back Michigan. The Wolverines are off a brutal loss at home on Sunday afternoon, falling to Illinois by 20 points in what was a tight game at halftime. But Illinois was really able to highlight issues that Michigan has faced throughout conference play, but the Wolverines have been able to sneak by with some fortunate wins.

Michigan is an impressive 13-2 at home, but just 6-9 ATS. Since January 16, the Wolverines have been struggling much more than their straight up win/loss record would indicate. Dusty May’s squad is 2-11 ATS since that point in mid-January, including 0-7 ATS at home. Michigan has lost two of its last three home games outright, falling to Illinois and Michigan State, and needing a buzzer beater to get past Rutgers as nearly a double-digit favorite. Even Michigan’s wins over this timeframe have been shaky, unable to put opponents away — each of its last nine victories have come by four points or fewer.

This Maryland team doesn’t mess around, and brings veteran guards that can handle the road atmosphere, along with the size to combat Michigan’s bigs. While the Terps are just 4-5 on the road on the season, they’re clearly trending up as we move into March. Going back to a similar time, Maryland is 9-2 since January 19, including 4-1 over the last five road games — the loss coming by three points at Ohio State. The Terps have also won two of those games outright as road underdogs, just as they’re priced tonight.

I like Maryland’s talent and momentum more in this spot, and initially backed the moneyline when I put the play in the betting group on Tuesday night. With the spread moving out to +2.5, I also added some more on the Terps to cover. Whichever way you decide to play it, good luck and let’s go Terps.
