Davante Adams has been released by the Jets on Tuesday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Adams had no guaranteed money left on his contract and releasing the wideout saved New York $29.9 million in cap space, according to Schefter. The Jets reportedly were looking for a team to trade Adams to earlier this week, but apparently couldn’t find a trade partner, which led to the receiver’s release.
The Jets acquired Adams from the Raiders this past October in exchange for a third-round pick, which seemingly was a move that was forced by Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers and Adams played 11 games together with the Jets last season and Adams finished with 67 catches for 847 receiving yards and seven touchdowns with New York. While the quarterback and receiver duo provided some offense, the Jets missed the playoffs with an ugly 5-12 record and now, New York has decided to move on from both Rodgers and Adams this offseason.
While the Jets failed as a team, Adams finished with over 1,000 yards for the season when you combine his games in Las Vegas and New York, which is the seventh time in the last eight years that he has surpassed 1,000 yards. While Adams is now 32 years old, the six-time Pro Bowler is still a high-end receiver in the NFL that many teams will persue now that he is a free agent. There is even a chance that Adams finds himself remaining in the AFC East, as both the Patriots and Bills are teams in need of a high-quality pass catcher.
As for the Jets, with Adams out of town, Garrett Wilson is the clear No. 1 receiver for New York going forward and he is likely a very happy man this offseason, as Wilson was frustrated with his role playing alongside Adams and there were rumors that Wilson would have demanded a trade out of New York if the team decided to keep Rodgers as its quarterback.
Coming off the 5-12 season and with it currently unclear who will be starting at quarterback for the Jets, they are tied for the second-worst odds to win the 2026 Super Bowl at +15000 on DraftKings Sportsbook.
