In the latest episode of All The Smoke, Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson are joined by NBA Champion and Houston Rockets legend Vernon Maxwell and eventually the conversation came around to Maxwell’s altercation with The Dream.
When it comes to funny NBA stories, no one quite tells a story like Mad Max. Barnes asked Maxwell if Olajuwon slapped the s*** out of him, and he admitted that there was, in fact, some truth to the story. Maxwell shared jokingly that the slap felt like Olajuwon wiped his hands on concrete. Maxwell takes Barnes and Jackson down memory lane to where the slap occurred. It was when the Rockets traveled to Seattle to play the Supersonics. He said he had a bad first half against a stacked Supersonics squad that featured the likes of Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp and Dana Barros.
Walking back to the locker room, he started venting his frustrations on how he was playing LOUDLY. As teammates like Sam Cassell tried to calm him down, Olajuwon stood right behind him, witnessing his tantrum, and checked him by telling him that his acting was unprofessional and to STOP IT! Mad Max did not like Dream’s tone, so he said, “F*** that, I am tired of you too.” Maxwell, in hindsight, said he shouldn’t have said that because, at that point, Dream lifted his hand and smacked FIRE into him. He admitted Olajuwon pulled back and slapped him so hard he thought someone had punched him.
Barnes asked Maxwell what he did next, and he shared that some scrambling was going on to try to hold him back from retaliating. Jackson laughed and added it is only one thing to do next when someone of Olajuwon’s stature slaps you. Mad Max explained he couldn’t retaliate the way he wanted to given they were on the road in Seattle but when they got back to H-Town, it would be trouble.
