One of the most famous sneakers of the 2010s and a grail for many returns on Friday, as the Nike Air Foamposite One “Galaxy” drops for a retail price of $230.

Before we get to the Galaxy colorway and its history, we have to talk about the history of the model itself. The Nike Air Foamposite One originally debuted on the feet of Penny Hardaway in 1997. However, originally it was intended for another Nike basketball legend, Scottie Pippen. But as he told Joe La Puma on a 2023 episode of Complex’s Sneaker Shopping, Hardaway saw them in a bag filled with sneaker prototypes during a meeting with designer Eric Avar and knew he had to have them. Similar to the Air Jordan 1, the shoe initially ran afoul of NBA uniform rules, so Penny had to get creative, drawing in black lines on the upper with a Sharpie. The OG Royal colorway would go on to be synonymous with Penny and the eventual 1997 National Champion Arizona Wildcats.
As I’ve written before, the shoe likely caught Penny’s attention because of its unique upper, which is made out of liquid polyurethane shell. Over time and with repeated wearing, the upper molds to your feet and offers a glove-like fit. The Foamposite One also features carbon fiber, Zoom Air and a translucent outsole. And although it was not initially designed to be a part of Penny’s signature line with Nike, it does carry his iconic 1 Cent logo on the back heel and on the tongue.
As for the Galaxy colorway, it too has a unique history. The Galaxy Foams dropped during the 2012 NBA All-Star Weekend, which went down in Penny’s old stomping grounds of Orlando. Nike basketball released a whole pack of “galaxy” themed sneakers, including Penny’s old Air Flight Ones, the Kobe 7, the LeBron 9 and the KD 4. But it was the Galaxy Foams that caused an uproar and near riots when they were released, instantly turning them into a grail for many sneakerheads from that era.
The Galaxy Foams were made possible thanks to a breakthrough where Nike finally found a way to put graphics on the polyurethane shell upper. After the success of the Galaxy Foams, Nike perhaps got a bit greedy, churning out colorways at a rapid pace and perhaps oversaturating the market. But, there’s no denying that the the Galaxy upper, paired with the “Remove Before Flight” tag, was unique at the time and captured the imaginations of the sneakerheads of the era. And Nike takes pains to point out that everything you loved about the Galaxy Foams in 2012 is back for this release — “Constellation graphics, glow-in-the-dark outsoles, Flight tags — it’s all there. Lace up and prepare for takeoff,” Nike says on SNKRS.
That’s all well and good, and certainly sneakerheads of a certain age will likely be hyped, but will the public at large react like the youth of 2012 did? Nike has been dipping back into its vault and pulling out what had been grails to, quite frankly, middling results. Wu-Tang Dunks and South Beach LeBron 8s came and went with a surprising lack of excitement. Not to mention the fact that Air Jordan 3 Black Cements and Air Jordan 11 Legend Blues didn’t sell out as quickly as expected. And we can’t ignore the fact that the Foamposite One, for all its legendary status, has never really recovered from its oversaturation in the 2010s and isn’t necessarily on trend for what is popular here in 2025. For whatever it’s worth, the 2025 edition of the Foamposite One Galaxy is already on StockX, with an average price of $462 on 1,271 sales.
I think it’s fair to say that we likely won’t see wild scenes like we did in 2012 outside sneaker stores with people lining up to get a chance to spend $230 on a sneaker from 1997. I honestly can’t predict how well this shoe will do. There’s a chance it sells out immediately and there’s just as big a chance it sits for weeks on shelves. Which wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, to be honest. I don’t think of a sneaker as a failure if it doesn’t spike on StockX after the fact, and there is something to be said for sneakerheads to be able to just roll up to a Foot Locker and pick up a pair. Many will finally be able to get their all-time grail for a reasonable price, which is something I think should be celebrated.
