The NHL’s decision to replace the league’s traditional All-Star break with the 4 Nations Face-Off was a masterful gamble — the international tournament has produced some of the most exciting hockey and passionate fan engagement the sport has seen in recent years.

The 4 Nations experiment is a surefire success for the hockey world, and with a renewed rivalry rematch between Canada and the United States on tap for the championship game, the tournament capstone should be a fun one.

The 4 Nations Face-Off final starts at 8 p.m. EST on Thursday, February 20. The United States has home ice this time around, with the contest taking place in Boston’s TD Garden.

The game will air on ESPN, while the streaming audience can watch on ESPN+ and Disney+, as well. Canadian fans can also find the game on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.

These two teams squared off last Saturday in an intense 3-1 victory for the Americans. During that matchup, tempers ran hot and gloves were quickly thrown off, with three fights within the first nine seconds of game time. While it’s less likely that players come out with swinging fists from the get-go, the stakes of Thursday’s rematch are even higher as these star-studded squads compete for the 4 Nations title.

The United States won two of three tournament outings to get here, with the lone loss coming to Switzerland on Monday evening. With a finals appearance in hand, the Americans rested several players, including star forward Matthew Tkachuk and goalie Connor Hellebuyck, who might just be the best goalie in the world right now. They’ll look to recapture their lost momentum and get back into form in the final matchup.

On the other hand, the Canadians are out for revenge after being upset on their home ice in Montreal last time around. Team Canada also went 2-1 in their three contests and are fresh off a 5-3 victory over Finland. Top defenseman Cale Makar should be back in the lineup after missing the first showdown against the USA due to an illness, and his presence should be a major boon for the northerners in this one.
