After completing the West Coast portion of the schedule, the PGA TOUR is headed to Florida for the buildup to The Masters in just a few weeks. Before they hit the Sunshine State for the next four weeks, though, they’ll make a stop south of the border for this week’s Mexico Open at VidantaWorld.
As the name implies, the Mexico Open will be held at VidantaWorld’s Vidanta Vallarta course. This course was designed by Greg Norman and has hosted the event since 2022. For the PGA TOUR, it plays as a par 71 at over 7,400 yards. It’s located in Vallarta, Mexico, which is a residential and resort community on the Pacific coast of Mexico.
The layout is nestled along the Ameca River, and also provides great views of the nearby Sierra Madre mountains. It features Paspalum grass on both the fairways and greens, which can lead to less roll-out on drives and slower-than-average greens.
In its debut on the PGA TOUR in 2022, Jon Rahm won by one stroke over Tony Finau, who returned to claim the victory the following year. In 2024, it was Jake Knapp who broke through for his first PGA TOUR victory by shooting an even-par final round and beating Sami Valimaki by two strokes. The winning scores have always been at least -17 with Finau holding the lowest PGA TOUR tournament score on this track at -24.
The course typically plays like many resort courses. It has plenty of length, which, coupled with the non-penal rough, tends to lead to players excelling who prioritize distance over accuracy. The design also leaves players with many approach shots from over 200 yards.
As you look to build your fantasy lineups or place your bets for this week, important stats to target include: Strokes Gained: Approach, Proximity 200+ yds, Driving Distance, and Par-5 scoring. You’ll also want to be sure to target players with favorable course history on this track over the last few years or similar resort-style layouts. Players who do well on low-scoring tracks and make plenty of birdies are the way to go for this week when scores are expected to be very low relative to par.
