In the most recent episode of The GM Shuffle, Dave Ross and Mark Dominik discussed Travis Kelce’s future post-Super Bowl LIX and whether retirement is the next step for the superstar tight end.
The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly given Kelce a deadline of March 14th to decide whether to return to the team or walk off into the sunset. Ross made the point that after the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, Kelce’s body language mirrored that of someone who was not necessarily defeated but instead coming to grips with the fact that he was at the end of his playing days.
Dominik admitted that the loss in the Super Bowl was bittersweet for Kelce, given that he wishes he was at the winning end of the game that would have cemented his team’s place in history. However, given the success of his podcast New Heights with his brother Jason, Dominik contends that there is a TON of money for the Kelces to make on the marketing side of things, whether through their podcast or even at the sidelines of live games.
In his heart of hearts, Dominik believes that Kelce has a lot to consider and suggests that, to some degree, Kelce loves attention, but not in a negative way. He playfully added that if Taylor Swift was doing the Eras Tour, Kelce needs to be doing the farewell tour and declare that this will be his last season, essentially announcing his final season in advance so that it is not a surprise to fans. To his point, Dominik stressed that fans often underestimate the effort and time it takes to get an NFL athlete’s body ramped up for a season. Given the number of years Kelce has played and his level of success, it has put him in a unique position that many NFL players don’t often reach where they can choose how they want to carry out their career. Dominik pointed to Jason being in the same position with the Eagles where he decided to retire versus a team forcing you to hang it up. Ultimately, he believes that Kelce has one more year left in him. Get ready for the Kelce Farewell Tour!
