Mr. Irrelevant has finally reached the point in his career where his salary may not be so irrelevant anymore. The 49ers don’t have the greatest track record when it comes to finalizing major deals in recent history. Remember the Aiyuk drama last season? Well, it would be in the organization’s best interest to avoid an excruciatingly long process extending their current quarterback, whom some still question whether he’s fit to be the face of the franchise.
Since being selected in the draft last overall in 2022, Purdy has thrown for 9,518 yards and 64 touchdowns, owns an average completion percentage of 67.5, and led his team to two NFC Championships and one Super Bowl appearance. So, what’s the issue? Why not pay the man now? Purdy is eligible for his first contract extension and has the possibility to reset the NFL market; however, NFL insider Ian Rapoport believes San Francisco faces a “math problem” when determining where his final number should land amongst NFL QBs (49ers Webzone).
Currently, Cowboys’ leading man Dak Prescott sits at the top of the quarterback market averaging $60 million a year. Getting Purdy into the top-five would require paying him a minimum of $53.1 million a year. To put this into perspective, the Iowa State alum’s base salary in 2024 was $985,000—that’s a HUGE difference.
Per the San Francisco Standard, Purdy doesn’t “really know what the next step is,” saying this is his “first time going through this all.” Getting a deal done quickly would allow Purdy to hit the practice field and offseason program without any wallowing drama following him, and he blatantly stated he wants the deal done “sooner rather than later.” The 25-year-old simply wants to win for the organization and everyone involved, hinting he won’t be pushing for SF to give him a historic contract.
