Pregame thoughts

I appreciated all the NOLA-specific fanfare, there. Lady Gaga can just about do anything and I’m on board. Great Coca Cola commercial after it, too. Though, points against it for getting me jazzed up we might be able to buy Tab again. That’d be a perfect gift for my Dad.

Anyone else feeling like that all that on-field bit was missing was a little Rihanna? I digress.

Jon Hamm for the Chiefs / Bradley Cooper for the Eagles

Mad men indeed if they can win three in a row. Didn’t know Jon Hamm was a Chiefs guy. Isn’t that Paul Rudd? It’s gonna be Bradley Cooper for the Eagles tunnel, right?

He beat me to it. He’s got that Rocket Raccoon vibrato going on. Plenty more cheers for Eagles.

Folks can’t stand sustained success, I suppose.

Happy Birthday, Saquon!

Major thanks to Fox NFL’s Tom Rinaldi for reminding us it’s Saquon’s birthday on the broadcast. I’m from Boston, so forgive me—anyone else remember when Nomar Garciaparra hit three home runs on his birthday in 2002? 22-4 win against the Rays for the Sox. I was at that game!

This is all to say: I’m sure many of you folks out there reading this might have sprinkled a few beans—not from the dip!—on Saquon to have quite the game on his birthday.

Sense of place

As someone interested in narrative, I’m taking a moment to give the NFL some credit, here. For a spectator who’s really got no personal dog in this fight, it’s been wonderful to feel so buoyed by the soul of New Orleans during the pregame ceremonies. I don’t remember the last time I walked away from a Super Bowl pregame song-and-dance to hit the bean dip with, “Wow, that version of America the Beautiful was super fun!” Probably never.

Not to mention, what a galvanizing city-wide heartbeat for New Orleans, whose citizens are still recovering from the terrorist attack before the Sugar Bowl at the Superdome.

Love that Ron Torbert is the referee for tonight’s game. Lovely coin. Here’s Chris Jones’s call: tails.

I consider myself a man who recognizes a fantastic voice actor. I’m surprised it took Tom Cruise this long to do one of these big game, pregame hype videos.

There is indeed a bit of “mission” to this Super Bowl, no? In that the Chiefs seek history. The Eagles are driven by revenge.

Oh, man. I’m all hyped now.

Eagles’ first drive

McDuffie on Brown for two straight plays. Looks like ball was supposed to go his way, but Slim Reaper comes in and makes the game’s first first down. Readers of my column know I’m expecting a big night from DeVonta.

Fantastic tackle from Nick Bolton on Barkley in the backfield. Hurts is trying to get the ball out quick, not getting his first read at all so far in the first fifteen from this offense. But Hurts makes it 4th-and-2, and the Eagles look like they’re going for it.

No tush-push formation, an absolute strike to A.J. Brown on Trent McDuffie. OPI call on Brown. Can’t have that. Not going to do anything for a lot of the conversation coming into this game.

Let them play. Chiefs take over after the Eagles punt to the 11-yard line.

Chiefs’ first drive

Juju with a reception. Cooper Dejean with a fantastic tackle there on Xavier Worthy in the flat.

Pacheco’s motioned to the top of the screen twice in the first few plays; this time on an incompletion to Travis Kelce that forces a third-and-long.

If you’re an Eagles fan, you love what you saw on that third-and-long from your pass rush. This defense looks like it’s picking up right where it left off:

Eagles’ second drive

First read was A.J. there again on the first-down throw to Goedert, and McDuffie is all over Brown, until he lines up opposite Smith at midfield. So now we know he’s not exclusively shadowing Brown.

Aaaaaaaaand there’s the call against the Chiefs’ defense. Let’s hope this game of flags stops now.

What a strike from Hurts to Dotson, made possible entirely by Barkley’s elite pass-blocking on a blitz pickup there. Brady points it out on the broadcast.

First touchdown: Jalen Hurts rushing TD

After a strike from Hurts to Dotson on the Eagles’ second drive that was at first ruled a touchdown, but the Eagles lined up at the one-and-a-half yard line.

Eagles lined up in tush push formation, and Jalen Hurts cashes the first touchdown of the Super Bowl on a tush push.

Chiefs’ second drive

Three-and-out. No run game so far.

Eagles’ third drive

Jalen Hurts is locked in and DeVonta Smith is here to play. This is beginning to look like a game that’s going to come down to chunk plays, whether through the air or on the ground. The Eagles need one from Barkley. But there’s Dotson again! And the Eagles are marching, again with a big-boy block from Barkley—this time on the ground.

First quarter clock is draining. Eagles are in their flow now. 1st-and-10 with 1:52 to go.

Offsides penalty on Omenihu gives Philly a free first down. Looks like Eagles will take this drive into the second quarter.

Eagles’ third drive (cont’d)

Kevin Costner and Pete Davidson. Alright then. Back to football.

We start at the KC 34 yard line. Hurts drops back and has plenty of time to zip one in to Barkley in the flat, and I do not need to be live-transcribing a play-by-play, here. But, hey. Live blogs are freeform. It flowed in the moment.

Zero from Spags and an interception by Brian Cook! Target to Brown with McDuffie in coverage. Oh boy.

Jalen Hurts interception—cash. And something must have been off there. Way too underthrown. Hurts was hit—that’s it. That was a free runner. Yikes.

But let’s not take away from Hurts’ efficiency—that’s his first pick since November.

Chiefs’ third drive

All yards are hard-earned for the Chiefs here. 3rd-and-3 from the nine-yard line is not where you want to be. Might as well be a third-and-long.

Grounder to Kelce. Chiefs punt. No rhythm to this offense right now; there hasn’t been since their first-fifteen looked totally disrupted.

Eagles’ fourth drive

Tyler Steen is in at right guard for Mekhi Bechton, who spent over ten minutes in the blue medical tent, per the FOX broadcast.

Beautiful back-shoulder sail route by Brown; better throw by Hurts. That’s a win against McDuffie in that matchup, and it does feel like Brown has the slight advantage there so far.

Great tackle from Justin Reid on Hurts there to force fourth-and-short. Eagles are gonna go, right? They’re going. They are not. They tried to force the Chiefs offside, by looks of it. And Elliott comes out for the field goal, and another questionable call against the Eagles.

Chiefs’ fourth drive

There’s a sack for Josh Sweat. Bad chip by Kelce.

Two sacks in a row. Mahomes is terrified in his pocket right now. The pass rush for Philly is getting home.

Cooper Dejean. Oh my. I’ll let the video do the speaking for me. Oh my. The birthday boy, I guess?

Chiefs’ fifth drive

This is not good for the Chiefs. Their protection schemes are breaking down faster than cars in the Blizzard of ’76. Chiefs punt to the Eagles down 17.

My goodness. I’m not going to start listing stats yet—I’ll save that for right before halftime—but it’s not good.

Eagles’ fifth drive

Starting to feel like a blowout here with only 17 points on the board.

With a holding call and a sack, this is the Chiefs’ time—but there’s an unnecessary roughness flag. A pick-six and that personal foul might just be the story for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Big stops for the Chiefs there on what looked to be another pressure-forced ball from Hurts to Brown. They’ll punt to Kansas City, who’ll start their sixth drive with two timeouts.

A.J. Brown has some issues with Sirianni on the sideline.

Chiefs’ sixth drive

First throw is a pick to Zach Baun. This is just ugly for the Chiefs. And, on the other hand, a total capstone of the Eagles’ defensive success all year. What a first half for this squad.

Touchdown: A.J. Brown 12-yard pass from Jalen Hurts

24-0 headed into halftime now.

Chiefs’ seventh drive

Ends with a DeAndre Hopkins wide-open drop. No help for Mahomes. The offensive line can’t do anything against this elite Vic Fangio pressure.

This Philly defense is the story, man. What do you say in that Kansas City locker room right now? A team with that level of championship integrity, down this big and this bad at halftime of the championship game? This thing might be over before they strap Kendrick with a mic.

Chiefs receive ball to begin 2H with their eighth drive

Eagles get their fourth and fifth sacks; Josh Sweat up to 2.5 on the game. And after a 47% pressure rate in the first half, the Eagles bury Mahomes twice more.

Punt to the Eagles.

Eagles’ seventh drive

Chiefs can’t get a stop after a good pressure on the edge on 3rd-and-5; Jalen Hurts escapes and scrambles for 16 yards.

And again. Another first-down conversion on third down by Hurts on a scramble. And what a catch by Barkley to bring it inside the five.

Chiefs’ Chris Jones looks like he needs an adjustment on his knee brace after the defense forces Philly to a third-and-goal. Back from commercial and it appears Chris Jones’ knee injury is a concern.

After an incomplete pass to DeVonta Smith in the end zone, Elliott comes out to drill a field goal to make it 27-0 Eagles with under six minutes to go in the third quarter.

Chiefs’ ninth drive

Eagles force a three-and-out after a first down from the Chiefs. Another holding call. This offensive line isn’t up to the challenge of a ferocious, relentless, and confident Eagles pass rush.

Eagles’ eighth drive: 46-yard pass from Jalen Hurts to DeVonta Smith

An absolute dagger on a play-action play from midfield. Smith lined up against Watson, and Hurts takes his shot:

Eagles 34-0, and that might be the dagger. It stands right now as the longest touchdown in the game, making DeVonta Smith the overwhelming favorite now to end Super Bowl LIX as DraftKings Sportsbooks’ King of the End Zone in the Super Bowl.

Chiefs’ tenth drive

Big 50-yard completion between Mahomes and Worthy to start this drive. Which, honestly, feels a bit like the Chiefs will be screaming into the void here.

And there’s a 13-yard catch for Travis Kelce on a circus shovel-catch! A little nod to all the Swifties out there with that lucky number.

Chiefs are still scoreless as we reach less than a minute to go here in the third quarter.

Eagles run it with Saquon to take it to the fourth quarter after a bit of a late-scoring tear there. We head to the final fifteen minutes of Super Bowl LIX, and it’s firmly in Philly’s hands.

And, honestly, if Anne Hathaway’s happy, I’m happy.

Eagles’ ninth drive (cont’d)

Great first-down conversion there on a zero blitz by Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown; Brown was one-on-one with McDuffie there.

It’s no question that Brown and Hurts have gotten the better of the league’s most underrated cornerback. Absolutely spectacular stuff from the Philadelphia passing game.

Oh wow. What a first-down run by Jalen Hurts. This is a legacy game for him, and it feels like he’s the favorite for the MVP right now.

Chiefs’ tenth drive

Strip-sack fumble on Mahomes by this unbelievable pass rush; Milton Williams with the Eagles’ sixth sack of the night. He recovered this fumble, too. My goodness:

Eagles’ tenth drive

Eagles take over in Chiefs territory immediately. Eagles just working clock, as the Chiefs are still not giving any forbearance whatsoever in the run game.

Broadcast understandably just gushes about Vic Fangio while the Eagles line up for a field goal to try to hang three more on the board to reach 40 points in Super Bowl LIX.

From 50 exactly, Elliott is nails. 40-6.

Chiefs’ eleventh drive

No way this is good television anymore. Plenty of Brady talking about the weight of losing in the championship games. Chiefs trying to put anything together while the Eagles play soft coverage.

Xavier Worthy is looking like he’ll end the game as the receiving leader, as he’s just hit the 100-yard threshold. Brady continues talking about his reactions to losses. A bit long-winded here, Tom.

TOUCHDOWN! Seven-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins from Patrick Mahomes

Likely the last gasp from the Chiefs, here. This came after a rub route to Hollywood Brown for a touchdown that was nullified by a Juju Smith-Schuster offensive PI call.

Love to see Nuk finally hit paydirt in a Super Bowl.

Eagles’ eleventh drive

After a slight scare on an onside kick attempt by Kansas City, the Eagles take over with 2:52 to go. Kenny Pickett is in the game to spell Jalen Hurts.

Oh, check that out. A Walton Goggins sighting! Love me some Walton Goggins. And he got to do a little Goggins Gogglin’ bit there at the end. We love to see it.

Chiefs’ twelfth drive – TOUCHDOWN! 50-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy from Patrick Mahomes

Pure speed route by Worthy here, which, incredibly, puts him in the lead as DraftKings Sportsbook’s King of the End Zone promotion. This pass just edges him over DeVonta Smith, whose 48-yard touchdown catch nearly secured it in the third quarter.

We’ll keep an eye on Next Gen Stats to see if Worthy eclipses Cooper Dejean as tonight’s fastest ball carrier. Chiefs convert the two-point attempt on a dart to Nuk.

Eagles’ thirteenth drive

Victory formation. Eagles stop the three-peat in dominating fashion.

SUPER BOWL LIX FINAL – PHI 40, KC 22

Sticking around here a bit after the game to track MVP as well, and provide any meaningful postgame highlights. Who else loved watching Brandon Graham appreciate Jalen Hurts to his face on live television, and invite Jalen to let us know? That ruled.
