The first touchdown scorer is one of the most popular prop bets every week in the NFL, but especially at the Super Bowl. For Super Bowl 59 between the Chiefs and the Eagles, there are so many exciting players on both sides of the ball that the first touchdown could come from anywhere. Of course, the players that score the most touchdowns in general are the most likely to score the first touchdown as well. However, there is always a chance of a player scoring the first touchdown out of nowhere. For example, in the Eagles’ three playoff games this season, the first touchdowns were scored by Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and Jahan Dotson. Barkley and Hurts are the two players with the best odds to score the first touchdown for the Super Bowl so those were no surprise. However, Dotson is +7000 to score the first touchdown of the Super Bowl, so his score was a real surprise in that game.
Saquon Barkley is unsurprisingly the most bet-on player to score the first touchdown of Super Bowl 59. Barkley is the NFL Offensive Player of the Year, the NFL’s leading rusher and scorer of 20 total touchdowns between the regular season and the postseason. Barkley has been an absolute menace in the postseason with three rushing touchdowns against the Commanders and two against the Rams. The Eagles will want to feed Barkley early and often so it’s no surprise that he has the best odds to score the first touchdown of the game and that he is the most bet-on player to score the first touchdown as well.
Following Barkley are the Chiefs’ top two pass-catchers, Xavier Worthy and Travis Kelce. Worthy led the Chiefs in total touchdowns this season with nine. He also found the end zone in the AFC Championship Game against the Bills. Worthy is so dangerous because he can score in so many ways, six of his regular season touchdowns came through the air and three came on the ground. The Chiefs will get him the ball in unique ways, making him a real threat to score. Travis Kelce had a career low in touchdowns this season, with just three in the regular season. However, Kelce did have a touchdown grab in the Divisional Round against the Texans. Bettors are relying on Kelce much more due to history than his current form. Kelce has struggled to find the end zone this season but he is one of the most proficient touchdown scorers in postseason history. In 24 career playoff games, Kelce has 20 receiving touchdowns. The public is trusting him to step up in the biggest game once again and find the end zone first.
Jalen Hurts is the next most popular player to score first. Hurts scored the first touchdown of Super Bowl 57 the last time these two teams faced so that is likely fresh on the minds of many bettors. Hurts is so dangerous because he can score a rushing touchdown in many different ways. Against the Rams in the Divisional Round, Hurts kept the ball on a zone read with Barkley and took it 44 yards to the house for the game’s first touchdown. Hurts can also score on a tush push once the Eagles get within a couple of yards of the end zone, just like he did in Super Bowl 57.
Kareem Hunt rounds out the top five most bet-on players to score the first touchdown. Hunt has an incredible journey, starting the year on his couch and then getting signed by his former team after Isiah Pacheco went down with a long-term injury. After Pacheco returned, many expected Hunt to fade into the background. However, Pacheco has been unable to re-find his old form and that has led to Hunt being the Chiefs’ lead back for the postseason. Hunt scored the Chiefs’ first touchdown in both of their playoff games so far and has gotten a large majority of the carries inside the red zone. If the Chiefs decide to go on the ground by the goal line, Hunt is likely to get those carries.
