By definition, this pick is a longshot pick and will will win almost triple your money, but it is within the realm of possibility based on the talents of these two dynamic dual threats. Let’s take a look at how it could happen on Sunday.
Patrick Mahomes touchdown potential
Mahomes threw for 26 touchdowns in his 16 regular season games while running for just two touchdowns, and in his two playoff games this year, he threw for two more while running for two more as well. In total, he racked up 32 touchdowns in 18 games. He had three total touchdowns in the AFC Championship against the Bills and had multiple touchdowns in eight of his last 12 games dating back to the regular season.
In the Super Bowl, Mahomes has stepped up with seven passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown in his four appearances. He had three touchdowns (all passing) against the Eagles when the two teams met two years ago.
Based on his past performances, Mahomes should be able to get two or three touchdowns or maybe even four if he has a huge game. He is much more willing to run near the goal line in more meaningful games, as he showed with his two rushes for touchdowns last week.
Jalen Hurts touchdown potential
While Mahomes will definitely need to step up, this prop relies heavily on Hurts, since he’s been a touchdown machine this season, especially on the ground. Much to the chagrin of Frankie Luvu, the Brotherly Shove continues to work for the Eagles, and Hurts has a high touchdown ceiling as a result.
In his 15 regular season games, Hurts had 18 passing and 14 rushing touchdowns, and in his three postseason games he added three passing scores and four rushing touchdowns. Those numbers give him 39 touchdowns in 18 games (2.2 per contest).
In his Super Bowl appearance two years ago, Hurts had three rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown. In the playoffs as a whole, Hurts has 17 scores in eight games, reaching a high point of four touchdowns against the Chiefs two years ago and matching that last week against Luvu and the Commanders.
The path to 7+ touchdowns
The game will have to be high-scoring, obviously, if both quarterbacks are going to combine for seven touchdowns. Both defenses have been solid this season, so it is truly a longshot that either will give up 50+ points like the Commanders did in the NFC Championship.
However, the last time these two met in the Super Bowl and the Chiefs won, 38-35, this prop would have hit. The key is that Hurts had to provide rushing touchdowns, and the ball has to be pushed aggressively down the field. We’ve seen both quarterbacks do what it takes to get their teams this far, and their individual star performances can definitely combine on the biggest stage to shine once again.
If you’re a fan of high-scoring, back-and-forth offense, this prop is a great longshot to throw some weight behind, giving you a chance to celebrate almost every score. It’s a little like taking the over, but it comes with a much bigger payout.
