After six years of belting 226 home runs for the New York Mets, Pete Alonso was looking for a massive contract this offseason. Unfortunately, the market never materialized as he hoped, so he ended the Marco Polo charade and agreed to a two-year, $54 million contract to remain a Met on Wednesday, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Alonso had a “down” year last season according to some, with a career-worst 24.7% strikeout rate and .219 ISO. That said, he still walked 10.1% of the time and belted 34 home runs. Sure, it was less than the 46, 40 and 37 the prior three seasons, but Alonso is still one of the preeminent power hitters in the game. The 75.3 mph bat speed is in the 93rd percentile while he’s never been below the 97th percentile in Max Exit Velocity.
Now he will be batting behind newly acquired Juan Soto.
