While so much of the Luka Doncic discourse the past 48 hours has been about the long term ramifications of his trade to Los Angeles — and rightfully so — there’s still the matter of the immediate. More specifically: When is he actually going to suit up next to LeBron James? We got a little bit of clarity on the situation during Doncic’s introductory press conference on Tuesday.
“Day-to-day” and “soon” obviously still paint a pretty vague picture, but they’re encouraging words to hear considering Luka Doncic has not played in a game since all the way back on Christmas. Still, if you include tonight’s contest against the Clippers, the Lakers have just five contests remaining until the All-Star break. Doncic making his Los Angeles debut following the league’s festivities would make some sense for someone who admitted he’s serious about getting back to 100% health. However, ESPN’s Shams Charania did say that Saturday’s matchup with the Pacers could be a target date to watch.
Luka Doncic’s fit next to the aforementioned James will be fascinating. LeBron has played with a host of Hall of Fame talents in the past, but not one quite as ball-dominant as Doncic, who has led the NBA in usage rate three times since the beginning of 2020-21. That said, Doncic is averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.8 assists in 2024-25 with only a 32.1% usage — the lowest mark of his career outside of his rookie campaign. He’ll be productive in any situation.
