While the 15-2 Eagles are heavy favorites, they’ve gotten to this point in spite of Jalen Hurts. The quarterback, recovering from a concussion, has thrown for just 259 combined passing yards over two straight postseason games. Philadelphia will likely need a better performance from the fifth-year pro on Sunday to reach the Super Bowl.
Hurts’ health has helped keep a talented group of Eagles wide receivers in check, including A.J. Brown. The three-time Pro Bowler has caught a combined three catches for 24 yards over his last two outings. That’s a far cry from his season-long totals of 67 catches for 1,079 yards and seven touchdowns. Some of AJB’s statistical decline is due to game script, as Philadelphia raced out to early leads against the Packers and Rams. Still, it’s become increasingly difficult to trust the veteran’s production.
Washington’s secondary was phenomenal during the regular season, giving up the fifth-fewest passing yards per game (196.0 YPG). However, this is a spot that Brown has typically fared well in. Over the wideout’s last six meetings against the Commanders, he’s averaged 6.0 catches and 93.2 receiving yards. That includes a terrific performance when these teams met in December: eight catches, 97 yards and a touchdown.
Philadelphia’s big-play ability is uncertain due to Hurts’ recent play. However, against a quarterback like Jayden Daniels, the Eagles might turn to a more aggressive game plan on offense. Assuming we see an increase in pass attempts on Sunday, there should be more work for Philly’s receivers. Brown has hauled in five or more catches in five of his last six appearances vs. Washington. I’m willing to bet that trend continues with a trip to New Orleans on the line.
