Report: Pete Carroll hired as new head coach of the Raiders

After bringing on John Spytek as general manager earlier this week, the Raiders have agreed to a three-year deal with Pete Carroll with a fourth-year option, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The 73-year-old Carroll was out of coaching last season after spending 14 years at the helm for the Seattle Seahawks, leading the team to a 137-89-1 record and playoffs berths in 10 of his 14 years. He also won a Super Bowl in the 2013 season. Carroll and the Seahawks missed the playoffs in 2023, and he was replaced by coach Mike Macdonald, who led the team to 10 wins but missed the postseason again in 2024.

Before his time in Seattle, Carroll rebuilt the USC program from 2001-2009 and was head coach of the Patriots and Jets prior to that. His next challenge will be to work with Spytek to get the Raiders back on track.

Last year, Antonio Pierce coached the Raiders to a 4-13 record in his one season as head coach after replacing Josh McDaniels in the middle of 2023 as the interim head coach. The team faces major questions on offense after QBs Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew each started a handful of games.

They do have some exciting pieces, but it’ll be up to Spytek and Carroll to rebuild an organization that has gone just 18-33 over the last three seasons while failing to make the playoffs. They’ll have the No. 6 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft to start the process.
