Report: Cowboys are hiring Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach

After posting three straight seasons with 12 wins, the Dallas Cowboys fell on tough times last season, finishing 7-10. The offense was 16th in yards per game and 21st in points per game. Not having Dak Prescott for half the season certainly didn’t help, but the rushing attack was 27th in yards per game and the defense was atrocious.

The once vaunted Dallas defense, that was fifth in both yards and points allowed in 2023 got flipped like an hourglass this past season, allowing the fifth-most yards and second-most points per game.

As a result, Mike McCarthy, who had guided the Cowboys for the last five seasons, took the blame and was replaced on Friday by offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Cowboys offense during Schottenheimer’s first season as offensive coordinator went swimmingly, as the team was first in points scored and fifth in total yards during the 2023 season.

This will be Schottenheimer’s first stint as a head coach after being an assistant, position coach and offensive coordinator in both the NFL and college since 1997.
