As the Heat navigate Jimmy Butler’s ongoing trade saga, Ware’s frontcourt pairing with Bam Adebayo has emerged as a significant success. Ware has elevated his play in his expanded role, averaging 22.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks in recent games.
“It’s exciting,” Ware said. “Me and Bam have been wanting it to happen. Just for it to happen, we had to make the best out of it for the first time. So we showed people what it looked like a little bit.”
Ware showcased his potential in a head-to-head matchup with Victor Wembanyama, finishing with 25 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks compared to Wembanyama’s 21 points and 10 rebounds. Ware has shown to be an explosive finisher who can anchor a defense while displaying further offensive upside.

Ware’s recent performances have propelled him to the forefront of the Rookie of the Year conversation. He now accounts for roughly 45% of Rookie of the Year bets on DraftKings Sportsbook, with 75% of the handle placed over the last five days. Ware’s odds for the award shifted dramatically from +15000 on Jan. 19 to +150 on Jan. 24, making him the current favorite.
Other top contenders for the award include Alex Sarr (+350), Stephon Castle (+370), and Jaylen Wells (+400). Zach Edey, at +1600, represents the next tier of candidates.
Dynamic Frontcourt Partnership
Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra’s decision to pair Adebayo and Ware has paid dividends, sparking a game-changing 36-13 run over 13 minutes in Sunday’s win against the San Antonio Spurs. The run turned a seven-point deficit into a 16-point lead, showcasing the potential of their complementary fit.
“They were dynamic,” Spoelstra said. “This is something that we’ve been slowly starting to work on.”
The pairing allowed Adebayo to thrive as a versatile defender while Ware protected the rim with his 7-foot-5 wingspan. Instead of having Adebayo anchor the defense often, having a shot blocker and general paint presence to anchor the unit enables Adebayo to fully leverage his versatility in space.
“I can get back to switching a little bit, guarding my yard,” Adebayo said. “I’ve been in a drop zone all year, so this is a good switch up for us.”
Kel’el Ware is Just Getting Started
Ware has made significant strides since being selected 15th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft. On the offensive end, the duo’s potential was evident in sequences like Adebayo driving past Harrison Barnes to set up Ware for a catch-and-shoot three. However, consistency from beyond the arc to maximize floor spacing would make this pairing well-rounded on both ends. Ware has shown potential—shooting 37.5% from deep on 1.7 attempts per game.
“I know that Kel’el generates a lot of opinions out there,” Spoelstra said. “Let us do our job. Let him do what he’s been doing. The initial thing was to get him comfortable in a role where he can really impact the game.”
As it stands, Ware’s momentum doesn’t appear to be slowing any time soon. How Butler’s situation plays out could impact the way Miami’s lineup looks, but it’s difficult to envision it negatively impacting Ware.
