Sonic and Knuckles are back. I’m sure most of us did not expect to see David Montgomery logging full practices this week. The man is clearly a cyborg. And Dan Campbell is the type of coach to reward said cyborg with early red zone carries that can hopefully turn into the first touchdown of the game.
First, Montgomery scored 12 touchdowns this season––all from within the red zone. Despite missing the final three games of the season, he is still tied with Jahmyr Gibbs for red zone carries. The Commanders’ defense ranks 27th in rush EPA, 28th in rushing yards per attempt and 23rd in red zone defense scoring percentage. All signs point to Detroit having an easy time moving the ball down the field and scoring quickly.
I do not expect Montgomery to necessarily see a high percentage of snaps in his first game back from what was thought to be a season-ending injury. He is Detroit’s go-to red zone option, though, and will offer a nice change of pace and running style that Washington will struggle to match. Campbell is a players’ coach and if the first touchdown isn’t a trick play to an offensive linemen, I feel confident that Montgomery will get his.
