This is another example of the Cowboys not knowing how to do business. It is perpetual.
All along, Jerry Jones was floating the idea that it’s not out of the question to bring Mike McCarthy back because of Dallas’ injuries and what he did the season before. Then why didn’t you bring him back? If you weren’t going to bring him back, why’d you wait so long? Because now, you lost out on the opportunity to request interviews for the Ben Johnsons and Aaron Glenns of the world.
The Cowboys are stuck in this neutral ground where regular seasons are enough, or now we have to pay Dak Prescott because we waited too long — or now we’re in trouble because we can’t get a guy like Mike Vrabel! (Not that he would’ve gone to Dallas, but you would’ve liked the opportunity given what he did in Tennessee.)
This is who the Cowboys are. They are dysfunctional at a level that is uncomfortable to watch.
Vikings overwhelmed
Before Vikings vs. Rams, the last team to finish with nine sacks in a playoff game lost. That was the top-seeded Titans, who lost to Joe Burrow and the Bengals. Point being, if you have a superlative quarterback, even a nine-sack came can be overcome.
With Sam Darnold, he’s a fine quarterback, a good quarterback. He’s not a superlative quarterback. Darnold cannot overcome nine sacks and two turnovers.
Still, he is going to make a lot of money next season. The Vikings have made a commitment to what they’re doing, but there are 10 quarterback-needy teams out there. Only two or three quarterbacks will be drafted in the first round this year.
Do the math. There’s going to be a bidding war for Darnold.
Legacy game on Sunday night
Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson is going to have an opportunity to slay the dragon in the AFC Championship. I expect little resistance for the Chiefs in this round.
The other is going to go away disappointed. Their legacy is going to be in question until they can march through.
