For much of this season, Trae Young has struggled to find his stroke. Atlanta has surrounded Young with versatile two-way players to help hide his glaring defensive abilities. Young has been an adequate offensive hub but is still navigating a middling unit.
He’s shooting a career-low 40% from the field and is shooting 33% from distance on over eight attempts a night. Those numbers are not indicative of a franchise cornerstone, regardless of the fact he’s leveled up as a playmaker.
Young has started the new year in the right direction, seeing a notable uptick across the board. He is starting to attack the cup more and has looked more comfortable from a distance.
Young gets to square off with a Phoenix group that can be abysmal defensively. Teams easily penetrate against the Sun’s struggling perimeter defense, and Jusuf Nurkic and Mason Plumlee offer little resistance at the rim.
In the prior matchup, Young relied too much on his jumper but got to the line in abundance and finished with 21 points. Young will likely change up his game plan and live in the paint, ultimately boosting his final line.
